gear selection problem

been having problems on selecting first gear the last couple of ride outs, seems to go in gear and the neutral light goes out but as I let the clutch out nada and the neutral light comes back on.
any pointers on what to check first will be much appreciated.

I have had that happen but only when cold when the gear oil is a little thick. Never really worried about it.
 
Mine does the same. Have always just sworn at it, engaged it again and then forgotten about it or put it down to character. At some point I might even do something about it....
