Hi. I’ve just bought a 2022 V7 Special 850 with 1400 miles on the clock. This is my first Moto Guzzi. When I’m riding and I change up through the gears there is a very loud ‘clack’ sound, it’s like someone is banging two hammers together. It doesn’t happen when the bike is staionery and I change up through the gears or when I’m riding and I change down to a lower gear. It’s only on the up shift on the move. I’ve replaced the oil with 500cc of the recommended 75-140 stuff. The thing is I just don’t know if that noise is normal for a Guzzi gearbox or if I have a problem - any ideas? If it’s normal, that’s fine - I’m just concerned there might be ‘bad things’ happening and I don’t want to make them worse. Any opinions and advice gratefully accepted.
Thanks
Tony

Guzzi gearbox is pretty noisy when changing. I bought my V7 850 as new so I think it is normal. Hard to say without hearing the sound, but there is clear "klang" sound when changing. I actually like it because you hear that new gear is engaged :D

You should try another V7 850 to confirm is the sound normal Guzzi sound or not.

Proper clutch adjustment helps, but even so mine has a noisy change but only when the oil is warm. It goes into first silently for the first ride of the day. The change for the top three gears on mine is nearly silent. For some reason the change either way (to or from) third gear always clanks. I have found that raising the gear lever on the splines helps a bit as it is easier to change up without over-changing. Also, the old BMW trick of pre-pressuring the gear lever before changing gear helps a lot. All that said I had hoped that the gear-change would have been better than it is. I doubt that the engine/clutch/gearbox/ final drive layout will ever be as slick as that on bikes like my CBR650R though. I suspect they vary on these bikes, as does vibration level.

Thanks guys. I’m relieved that ‘noisy is normal’ and that I’m not just waiting for the gearbox to fail. I’ve also found that the gearbox whines constantly when the bike is moving - it sounds like a car gearbox where the bushes and bearings have become worn out! Anyway, I’ll just learn to adapt to the bike’s foibles as it’s still a fun bike to ride.
Thanks again
Regards
Tony

Thanks for your reply - I guess I just need to get used to it. I also have an occasional problem changing up from 1st gear into 2nd gear after starting from cold. It’s not that it’s just difficult, it’s actually impossible until I’ve revved the engine a few times and made several attempts to get into 2nd. Once the engine is warm, there’s no problem. I’m tempted to put some Molyslip in the gearbox to see if that will improve things. I guess a gear pinion somewhere isn’t where it’s supposed to be when I try to change up. Anyone else had anything similar?
Thanks
Tony

I used to have that issue and I know another owner with the same problem. In my case it was the repositioning of the gear lever that cured it. As standard it was too low resulting in the selector not fully returning; again, clutch adjustment helped too. It hasn’t occurred since. I would not advise adding molyslip. M-G specifically advise against it. Synthetic gear oils have their own additives; the days of adding it to mineral oils in big blocks are over.

Thanks. I’ll check the gear lever position. Neat tip regarding using a 2mm drill bit as a gauge.
