Gearbox noise

Just a little concerned.....
So far it happen to me twice ..........my 09 Stelvio I noticed a clunking noise coming from the gearbox when it’s cold.
Well I say when cold ….. I should say when the bike is parked on its side stand for over 2 days.

The symptoms are felt and heard only when the gear is engaged and the clutch is at its friction point (revving at idle) and slowly moving forward.
When working with the clutch lever the clunk noise is heard at the same frequency as engaging/ disengaging the clutch.

After having taken the bike for a couple of miles and reassessing the problem …… its gone.
I leave it parked on the side stand for a couple of hours / less than a day ….. doesn’t do it!!!

I’m going for a long shot here!
The bike is tilted on the side and having sat there for a while the gear oil in the cage has shifted…..and because of this its taking a little time to lubricate the gear shafts properly?
I do use the recommended gear oil AGIP API GL5 MG/S 85w-90

Has anyone hear of a similar problem?

Thanks

I wouldn't call that a problem. Have you ever run any of the older 5 speeds or an air head BMW? Then you would know "CLUNK".

How about modern DR650SE: Clack! Click..Clock. Gdup! Missed arrgh! Klllick... etc for more than 100000kms (first owner confirms same sound from km 1).

Viscous drag from the cold oil spinning the pinnions on the shafts. Once warm and the oil has thinned less force is transmitted to the shafts as the dogs engage so it quietens down. S'not a problem.

My previous R1100 ..... I really didn't take notice.
Mind you I was getting more noise from the engine running than any anything else.

I guess my "CLUNK" is not so bad after all.

Thanks guys for confirming ...... ;)

Yes, my Stelvio does the same thing, Dan. I think it is just the nature of the beast.

Cheers,

The R1100 is an oil head. They don't clunk like the air heads did.

Then I wouldn't know!

I was really concerned about the clunkiness of the Norge tranny when I first got it but the more miles I put on it the better it gets.
