Handlebar mounts

OK - I've spend the better part of a day beating my head against this issue.

Given that my Google-fu is particularly pathetic, I still cannot a small switch enclosure that I can mount on these "large boned" [ ] 8V handlebars.

I'm essentially looking for this no-longer-in-production HotGrips item:

Small enough for a small switch or PWM rotary dial, mounts directly to the bars. HotGrips is apparently out of production at the moment, and the gentleman answering the phone today seemed completely disinterested in making a one-off capable of fitting Griso bars.

If I can't anything like the above, I'll have to get a small-ish project box and a u-bolt to clamp it on. But that might not look so great... *sigh*

Any suggestions out there?

Thanks -

NBG

I had a similar problem with a cruise control installation and wound up drilling a hole in the gas tank's wing for the on/off button. For the set/resume buttons I used a Pingel Slim Line handlebar switch, available in both one- and two-button versions. Pingel doesn't make a 1 1/8 inch model suitable for the middle of the Griso handlebar, but the 7/8 inch works well when installed right up against the handlebar grip.

Here's a photo of both the Pingel and the wing switches:

Best price on the Pingel, by the way, was at oemcycle.com:

You can find more details by searching for "griso rostra" at wildguzzi.

Gah! You, sir, have a stronger stomach than I. The thought of drilling into plastic at this point in my ownership just makes me shudder. Of course, I'm a n00b; I might change my mind in a few years... :)

There are a few of these things floating around, the the manufacturer might be back in a month or so.

But that still doesn't help me with my needs now: I need to mount a switch or 2 closer to my handlebar's midline than the more tapered areas. Any other ideas?

You could use a Pingel Slim Line 2 Button switch in 1 1/4" size, sleeved down to 28mm w/ rubber sheet. It might look pretty good up against one of the handlebar risers. It measures about 55mm (2 1/8") from top to bottom. I think this is the only Pingel model that has a bore bigger than 1 inch.

It took me forever to get up the nerve to drill through the gas tank wing, but I'm glad I did. I installed a very good quality switch, so I feel less like a hacker and more like a re-designer. I even think it looks good now. It's all in the mind, you know.

If you go through the wing you'll want to install a wiring connector like the HItachi style ones that are used on the OEM wiring harness so you can easily remove the wing. Check my other post on the cruise control for info on a supplier.

...and they don't fit 1-1/8" bars.
Yes, I'm very aware. Sounds like Aerostitch has really cheapened out with the doodad, very unfortunate, as it used to be a solid product.

UPDATE!

I found the Hot Grips switch box you mentioned available on closeout at oemcycle.com:

http://www.oemcycle.com/Item/product/900053354/noRediR=1/

It will fit 7/8 or 1 inch bars. Again, 7/8 is appropriate for the skinny part of the Griso bars. (Or at least of the G1100 bars.)

I ordered one for myself just to have on hand. I hope it wasn't the last one.

Update: I received the Hot Grips switch box, advertised as "stainless." It's plastic, and not particularly sturdy.

I'm disappointed and wouldn't recommend it.

Has stainless screws, though.
