Has anyone installed a headlight modulator on their California? I have had them on my other bikes and they work!

Can anyone advise me on what headlight modulator would work? I am not used to such a sophisticated looking headlight!

So what are you going to modulate? The headlight itself or the LED running lights? Personally, I would opt for the latter, they are far more obvious during daylight hours.

I run with my headlight off during the day because I believe the bike is more visible in this mode.

I don't know. My prior experience is in using a KISAN headlight modulator. THAT particular headlight used a dual filament bulb H4 bulb.

The California has a bulb for low beam, a bulb for high bean and then the LEDs for the DRL function. My assumption is that I would apply the modulator to the high beam bulb only as most seem to be designed to work in that way.

Have you tried to get someone else to ride your bike

  • with the LEDs only illuminated?
  • with the LOW beam bulb illuminated?
  • with LEDs AND LOW beam bulb illuminated?
  • with only the HIGH bean bulb illuminated?

I've had comments from those (temporarily ) in front of me saying that the 1400 looks like it has twin headlights when observed in their mirror. This is not so pronounced when the headlight is on too.

I can't run without my LED running lights (i.e. with only the low or high beam (bean?) illuminated. Can you?

Probably not, if you can't. I haven't been able to get any riding time to speak of yet. My bike (see avatar) is hold up in the basement waiting for the snow and salt to go away.

In the mean time though I am working on getting it set up like I am used to with my other bikes. Hence the questions about the headlight modulator.

I thought when the headlight was on the LED's were off. Maybe I should heck that when it thaws.

I am looking for any help along the line of what I should look for when buying a headlight modulator. The one I used before on my 2005 Yamaha Royal Star Tour Deluxe was from KISAN. The modulator part plugged into the headlight socket and then the bulb plugged into the modulator. It had a remote sensor to "see" if there was enough daylight to operate in flash mode. Otherwise, if it is too dark, it would not flash.

The LEDs run at lower brightness when the headlight is on.
