Hi,

I purchased Heidenau K60's and the front is an exact fit, 110/90. The closest for the rear is a 170/60 or 150/70. I went with the 170 as it maintained the width and using a few online tire calculators the difference should be negligible. I have Avon Distancia's on the bike now.

However, in setting the tires side by side the difference is semi alarming. What am I missing, it is the tread depth?

Any comments, even if I am being a moron is welcome :)

Not surprising. I attended a tire seminar at a conference in Nashville TN some years ago. One of the statements was that tire size could vary by about 10mm or more for the same quoted size from different manufacturers. That is say manufacture A tire is a 170, but measures 160mm, Manufacturer B 170 actually measures 180mm. If width can vary that much, so could height.
