Help with dash error 2013 NTX

We use a milliohm meter at work. The motors are so big (8 tons is the biggest, the size of a small car) that a standard fluke meter always reads 0 ohms when testing the balance of the windings. The miliohm meter goes down to three decimal places.

Milliohms is resistance. Number of coil turns dictates whether it's a step up or step down in voltage.

Coils are within spec. Left is 520mohms and the right is 517mohms.

Cabling is fine, continuity is good, plugs look new inside (no corrosion). It's almost like a fault within the ecu. The bike runs fine but it is unable to detect voltage on pin 38. Could there be any other reason the ecu might think there is no voltage?

At least you are figuring out the electrics on the bike. It will come in handy at some point during it's life.

Is there any other errors on the dash. Scroll through the entire list of ECU and Dash errors in the diagnostics screen. There are multiple pages for each so some people have missed some of the other errors as they did not scroll to the next page.

What is your voltage at the battery when the key is on, and then what is it when the bike is running.

Also, does the error come on as soon as you turn the key on, or only when it is running.

Are the plug caps the originals, or are they the aftermarket NGK. If they are the originals, you should at some point change them out to the NGK. The originals will fail, but I don't think this is your issue as everyother time a plug cap has failed the engine ran like crap and there were not codes thrown. You can swap the plug caps around from left to right and see if it follows just to rule it out.

Failing all that, may be an ECU glitch as you suspected. You will need some software to reset the codes and see if that makes a difference. Dealer may be able to do it for free if you are close to one.

No other errors. Scrolled through both ecu and dash menus.

No idea what the battery voltage is but I'm guessing it's fine because there is no hesitation starting and it only turns two times max before it kicks into life. I will test it.

The error is there as soon as the tach has done it's sweep without the engine running.

Plug leads are original and I do plan on swapping them out, I already have the new boots.

I'm reluctant to take it to the piaggio dealer because the sales team are vultures, god knows what the techs are like. Besides, they'll just spend half a day doing exactly what I've already done and charge me for it.

Couple more questions. Are the ecu's interchangeable or are they coded?

Also, I've ordered the guzzidiag lead. What kind of software do I need. Can I use any obd2 software?

ECU's are interchangeable, dashboards are programmed to your keys and therefore are not.

Use guzzidiag for the software.

Ok, so hooked the bike up to the laptop and reset the stored errors using the guzzidiag software and it's cleared. Bizarre one that. I'll take it for a long ride in a few days to see if it returns. Thanks for all your help.

Excellent. Bizarre one indeed. Battery disconnect should have cleared it also.
At least now you are familiar with the coil circuit and electrics on the bike. That knowledge will come in handy some day.

Ride Safe....
