Hi All,

I realise by this post I am about to be branded a heretic ! My interest in Moto Guzzi extends to the wonderful engine only ! I have just bought a 2003 California Stone 1100 which has done 12000 miles and is in first class condition. I am about to strip it down for the engine and other bits and pieces to build a Morgan Replica three wheeler. When I have the engine on the bench the question I am wanting to ask is, are there any known issues which I ought to service whilst I have the engine easily accessible ? clutch, seals etc ?
Any help would be appreciated.

Best wishes to all

Paul.

Hi Paul,

Using a guzzi big block in a trike is not heresy! I saw a Tri-King, or something similar, last spring - very unique ride.

I can point you to a couple of resources for your project you might not have.
1) Guzziology by Dave Richardson. An older edition with your engine would do.
2) MGNOC News. There was a series of articles on how to build a trike, 6 IIRC, a few years back. All back issues are available on-line to members.

I thought that the clutch on a Morgan/Guzzi trike would be something other than a MG clutch, maybe a VW bug - not sure.

Some Cali engines had a hydraulic valve recall not sure which years. Someone else may hopefully will chime in on this.

good luck,

Hi Paul are you on the Isle of Man ?
If so I am too and did have a Black Cali Stone about the same year :D What will you be doing with the rolling chassis ????
Cheers
Cliff.
A great engine overall personally can't think of any issues

You may want to contact Frank Wedge of the MGNOC. http://www.mgnoc.com/ A while back there were a series of articles on the building of a three wheeler using a Guzzi power plant. He may be able to send you copies of the articles for reference. Also on the old forum here it was covered as well.

While the engine is out, I would put in a good cam chain tensioner. The factory one isn't that great. Something like this would be good, http://www.mgcycle.com/product_info.php?products_id=347 I don't know of a source in Europe for these, but I'm sure there is. Once you have a good tensioner you should be good for may miles.

Also check the bottom two bolts of the rear main carrier. In some model years these were through holes to the crankcase and could leak around the bolts. If these are through holes on your engine, clean the holes and bolts thoroughly and use a thread locking compound (loctite 242 or equivalent) to seal the threads.
