How do I get my shock back on?

Locked my helmet to my shock, broke the key in the lock. Took the shock off to get the lock off.

Now how do I get the shock back on? I THINK if I compress the spring (there's that screwable ring at the bottom). It certainly didn't help uncompressing the spring (screwing the ring out).

Not quite sure how it works. What does the top ring do other than look pretty? What am I missing? I XTN rearShock

Picture related.

Thank you as always in advance.

I think you have to support the bike in the centre, remove both shocks then allow the swinging arm to drop down. Attach the shock back onto the solid mounting point on the frame and then raise the swinging arm into position and secure the lower mounting points.

Per above, but you don't need to remove the other side, simply slide a jack under the frame opposite the kick stand (or have a friend), lightly lift the rear wheel until you can get the shock to align.

I'm using a combination lock and I just rest the helmet on the front brake lever and then lock the lock to the throttle cable. I've got a little leather pouch to carry the lock attached to the left rear footpeg/muffler bracket. Saves me having to carry another key and losing it or having it rattle around my ignition switch and scratching stuff up.
