I keep hearing more and more about this little device. If you have anyone to worry about you, might be worth looking into, especially if you ride alone to remote places of the Globe. Also fun to keep friends/family updated as you go... as it integrates into Google maps as well.

The unit is one sale online now for $125 + monthly fee.

Lots of discussion on ADVrider and the HUBB about this bit of kit - some good and some bad.

I want to know what would happen if you pressed the emergency button while on a road somewhere in the sticks of Angola. Somehow I don't think the cavalry that is promised in the glossy brochures will come to your aid.

Here in Aus the EPIRB is the device of choice for the lonely traveller.

Hey thanks buddy....that would be good here in Nevada where just about everything is desolate....
Just curious, though....wouldn't a cell phone do that as well????

Tim, the Spot tracker is GPS based, when cell phones dont work. ;)

Murph, you need this (click on pic for more info)... man am I glad they didn't have that when I was a kid.
Edit: Though I have seen a similar service with most cell phone carriers nowadays too.

RacerX-
I just showed that to my 16 year old Boy Crazy Teenager. She told me you were "Evil"
Very Sweet item to hold over her head.... if she gets in over her head.
Thanks buddy. I think you're an angel.

I have been using my 'Spot' for about 6-months. I paid 150 USD for it and got a 50-dollar rebate. The service is 99 bucks a year. The only negetive I see is that you have to be conscious to use it. If you hit a tree and knock yourself cold you are SOL. The fact that it will cover up to 100,000 dollars towards a rescue gives me piece of mind. I carry it mountain biking and hiking when I know I will be someplace alone and away from civilization. On a mountain biking 'epic' myself and three others rode from Durango, CO to Moab, UT - 7-days in the mountains. We got caught in a snow storm - we were all suffering from hypothermia. It could have turned out bad. This was the main reason I purchased it. On my motorbike trip to the northern reaches of British Columbia last fall I rode a number of days where I would come accross one car every hour, and the weather at times was far from ideal. Fortunately I haven't had to use it - I hope I never do. Oh yeah, it's water-proof also.

Something else I like is an ID brachlet. I have my name, emergency contacts and allergies listed.

Interesting gadget ... but I'd opt for something not requiring batteries to retain a berserk teenager ;)
