Hi guys,

Has anyone ever imported a motorcycle from Europe? I'm eyeing a Zigolo 110 as my next acquisition, but like most of the bikes I really like, they're pretty rare in North America.

I'm hoping there's some company/service doing this that's easy to work with...

One thing to note is that if you plan to license and insure it to ride on the streets, ICBC is going to want it to have an inspection. About 9 years ago I purchased a 1962 Minsk two-stroke. Prior to purchasing it I contacted ICBC and was told by them that because of the age there would be nothing extra that I needed to do and that I would be able to register, insure and ride it without any additional inspections or paperwork.

After purchasing it and spending many months getting it working reliably, I contacted ICBC again and was then told that I needed to have it safety inspected. They told me that because of where I live on Vancouver Island (Comox) the only place that could do the inspection was of all places Canadian Tire.

I contacted Canadian Tire and was told by them that they would not do the inspection as they had no one who had any understanding of motorcycles working for them. I contacted ICBC back and was told by them that I could at my own cost bring the motorcycle across to their facility in Vancouver where they would inspect it, and possibly give me a registration for it. They at this point told me it was not likely that they would pass it on the inspection.

In the end I sold it to a friend who hung it on his wall. It looks great, but I will never trust ICBC again. So just before warned about that.

wow, quite the cautionary tale, thank you.

this is the sort of thing I'm concerned about...

if I want to buy a little Japanese / JDM car, there are companies here that understand all those issues and have experience working through them, I'm hoping to find something similar for euro motorbikes.

Europe to Canada should be OK because, at least a couple years ago, Canada imports and sells Euro spec bikes.
Canada to USA (unless 25 years old or more) is a nightmare and a half. Not recommended. I have a long story about that.
