The second photo makes it look blued. It isn't, but some odd appearance in the image.

The pin and mains look fine. I recall seeing these before, on my T3 crank (out of a CX100) when I put it together.

The sludge trap came out relatively easily and there wasn't much mung in there, about right for a 9,500-mile bike.

Fred, is there someone nearby who can UV dye test it?

The radiusing looks shitty but, to be honest, Guzzi radiusing is often very ordinary. I'd hazard a guess it would be fine but it would only be a guess. only real way to be sure is get it crack-tested.

Thanks Pete,

I'll ask my machine shop if they can do that. I think it's probably ok too. I took a crank out of a LeMans that had run out of oil and welded the rod bearings to the crankpin, and it was still fine after a polish.
 
I would highly recommend against a Magnaflux or other crack detection process...basically because you'll be spooked by what you'll find. The last Guzzi crank I magnafluxed was covered with (minor) stress cracks on the outer surface. My understanding is that these were a product of the manufacturing process...Guido might have been cooking pizza in his induction oven before he hardened your crank.

If you're not racing the thing, and it doesn't have a history of abuse, then I'd probably just run it. Most of the pathological crank failures that I've seen have been from improperly ground radii on the crankpin.

Yes, sometimes it is best to simply just not know that your bike should've blown up thousands of miles ago . . .
 
Fred, you aren't going to be racing this thing are you? As Ed says most failures are down to the fact the radii seem to be put on with an axe:laugh:

We threw out one crank on the racer because it had a very visible crack on the crankpin. The one I used afterwards was blue light tested and showed a few shadows but since it was the only one we had we flung it in and its been in there for three seasons and hasn't gone 'Bang' yet!

I think both of these blokes are right. There's cautious and there is dim. I'm being dim. Flig the sucker back in and enjoy.
