Hi all,

Well, hee we go again. I fixed this sticking cap just a while back and it has swollen again. I will grind more of the plastic off this time and make sure i get some time out of the fix but unlike the last time,I can't get the key to turn at all. any ideas so I don't snap the key? The allen head srews around the top? are they a way in? I read an old post and a guy was using a screwdriver...is this the way in? Seems damaging but I'm gonna need some gas here pretty quick :woohoo:

After you get that key out, I strongly suggest buying a new cap. I had the same situation with my Jackal. Mine happened out on the road after a fill up at the gas station and the key was stuck in the cap. So I couldn't get the key out to put back in the ignition. I was stuck. Luckily a guy with a RV and some tools rolled in. I ended up taking the cap apart to get the key out and rode home with no gas cap. But I did have the warning signs of it getting stuck before it got totally stuck. New cap cost me a little more then any other gas cap on the face of the planet but worth the peace of mind. Ruined my whole week of riding... hurry up and wait for a guzzi part to get in.. we all know the routine. Good luck out there.. Jackals are awesome!! (unless someone has a magic cure, and I hope they do, I would get a new cap  )

Thanks,

Hot water?? I'll try it. I have fixed it once but obviously didn't grind enough plastic to keep it free turning for long. Also, when you say to change cap to 02' does that mean that the cap only or the whole system(collar held in w/ allen screws). my key isn't stuck it just won't turn the mechanism at all. I tried looking at a blown up detail on this old tractor and couldn't tell anything from the drawing as far as removing those allen screws. Anyone done that operation before?? Thanks for the help.

Steve

Take it apart via all those little allen heads, then disassemble the gas cap from the bottom and discard it.

Replace the whole unit with the all metal cap that MG Cycle sells. Problem solved.

If you are technically competant, you can replace the tumblers in the lock with the stock bits.

I just carry a separate key for the gas cap.

Any one know of an aftermarket non-locking cap that's available? I did the "file down" thing with a rotary tool twice but now I use a screwdriver to save my key.
Ed ;)

I was seriously thinking of checking in w/ a locksmith but thought I would give it one more try and so, as I kept preety good pressure on the key and shaking back and forth thought maybe tapping the cap while doing all that might help and 2 minutes laterit popped open. the tapping instrument was a shorty screwdriver wrapped in a rag . I ground a healthier amount of plastic off this time and will continue to check for tightening regularly. Thanks,

Aha! perseverence triumphs, and , if your cunning you could start banging away at that cap BEFORE you get to the gas station ( oh , about 2 minutes should do it ) . You will know if things start to deteriorate again coz you will be past the gas station when the cap opens ( might pay to practice your U turns :p ).

crap!! another good plan...foiled. Guess I could start 4 minutes away which would work unless I'm only 3 minutes from a gas station  and then ...yep, better go practice those U turns. :side: always good advice on guzzi forums. Enjoy the day, ride safe and be well.
