Kill headlight before starting?

I'd prefer to switch headlight / all lights on after starting my Nevada 2004. Is there any simple way to achieve this?

Everything is perfect right now, but I just think it completely wrong to be burning lights while also engaging the starter!

Also... to re-set the clock I notice that the ignition must be switched on, but engine must not be running. So the headlight will be burning while I fiddle to set the correct time. Is this 'battery abuse', or am I just too sensitive?!

You're looking for a circuit that is available on BMW K-bikes called the Load Shed relay. The LSR's function is to kill electricity to non-essential circuits on the bike when the starter is engaged. A description of it is here.

There might be a way to adapt a similar circuit to the Nevada's wiring if you were so inclined.

I don't know about a Nevada but most bikes I have had with the auto on headlight turn off the headlight when the starter button is pressed. This goes back to my 1987 Honda VFR and I think my 1979 Honda 650.
As for having the light on while adjusting the clock I really don't think you have to worry unless you have a questionable battery or you are really slow at adjusting it.
Try watching your headlight when you hit the starter button and see if it stays on.

Thanks for the replies. Really useful!

The short answer is probably, yes I am a bit too sensitive; and the auto-lights-on is not really a big issue! Thanks again.
