Ran my B11 on Shell Helix 15W/50 syn and some 10w/40 when other stuff was to expensive. Yes I know we should use 10/60 (not that hot in the UK) but it's expensive and does it have the ZDDP content that the flat tappet Guzzi like? Current cheap oils are ACEA A3/B4 API SM aimed at roller tappets perhaps need a Redline engine breakin additive (ZDDP). After 80000 miles of low ZDDP content oil given the 1200 engine failures maybe I should use an ADDP additive now I have read up on it. Perhaps new V7 buyers should add ZDDP as like the b11 it's still a flat tappet. If u bought a new V7 would it benefit from Redline breakin ZDDP additve given the rarity of oils with ZDDP? Can old engines with reasonable valve wear benefit form ZDDP?

The Guzzi-recommended Eni 10W60 oil is rated API SG, which has a higher ZDDP content than oils with later API ratings like SM. Don't blame Guzzi if the flat tappets on your newer V7 engine wear out prematurely and you didn't use their recommended oil.

The tappet failures on the 1200s are probably more due to over cooling than anything else. They have occurred in cold climates and in conditions where the engines just don't warm up properly.

The 1200s are oil and air cooled. They have a two oil pumps. One for lubrication and one for cooling. Unfortunately, they don't have a thermostat for the oil.

No oil works well cold. I don't think any amount of zinc would've saved them.

Your V7 is predominantly air cooled. I don't think it holds enough oil to cool much of anything and there is no oil cooler.
