After the last bath-time, I noticed the drain tube at the filler cap (B11) wasn't draining and a little water got into the fuel tank. No prob, I poured a metho down to absorb and burn it off. I wouldn't have time to fix it for a few days so the metho was necessary.
Well it's drain the tank, and whip it off so I can clear the blockage. So far so good. Not wanting to scratch the paint I decided to use the lid of a polystyrene box for padding (at this point I'd misplaced my crystal ball).
With the tank upside down, the tiniest amount of fuel leaked out the closed filler cap, ran down and made contact with the styrene. It took a few minutes to realize, the fuel had melted the polystyrene, created heat........
and melted the tank!! There was blistering on the paint and it looked terrible.
I was disgusted with myself, so I walked away before I did something dumb.
This was a few days ago, today I had the courage to go take a looksie. The tank appeared to reform perfectly, lots of polishing and you'd have to look really hard to see the history.
I dodged a bullet this time (figuratively speaking). Repeat to self "polystyrene is bad, polystyrene is bad..."
cheers
