Manual fuel taps - Cali 1100i

My Cali fuel pump was making a lot of noise so had the tank off and fuel taps apart to clean crud off. Now virtually noise free. However, on inspection one of my manual fuel taps does not allow fuel through as one of the internal holes has been blanked off by the factory. The other is fine. Don't understand why the bike has been fitted with a blanked off fuel tap on one side. Can anyone help? Fuel delivery from the other is fine and fuel flows freely through pipes but does not flow at all from tank into other tap. Puzzled?
 
It sorta makes sense. My 1997 Cali 1100i has two gas taps, and the manual says both have to be turned on. Why? If you're chewing through gas that fast, you ain't gonna go very far.

Of course it could be argued that two taps are only necessary for peak demands (like wide open throttle), but I think the same logic above applies. My 2002 V11 Le Mans only has one tap.

It was probably easier to blank one rather than redesign the fuel line and make a blank for the other hole in the tank. Later designs moved the fuel pump inside the tank.
 
My '94 Cali 1100i had two taps and I was under the impression (not sure why) that one was for main tank and the other for reserve - never got to test it.

The fuel pump stopped after the initial prime when starting the bike but then ran continuously and was rather noisy.

Both taps should be flowing fuel. Both should be on as well. There is no reserve position on a FI bike, running out of fuel would damage the fuel pump (overheat). I'd recommend replacing the tap that is blocked off.

Why, John? Surely the single tap can supply enough fuel?

You don't have to have a reserve section in your tank to run out of fuel, which I've managed to do several times. Are you saying my fuel pump has been damaged?
 
It is like this Dave, the design of the 1100i tank is such that with a fuel tap working on only one side, there will be fuel in the other side that can't be utilized. In other words, you will run out of fuel sooner. As to the fuel pump damage, the pump is designed to run with fuel in it, you run it dry and some damage will occur. Yes your pump probably has some damage, but not enough to stop working yet. My recommendation is to get fuel before you run out. You do have a trip meter that works don't you?
 
Thanks for the input guys. Based on low cost on new taps I am replacing both as these also come with new "tower" filters. Cleaning the old ones cured the pump noise so decided to fit new taps especially as only £11 each and easy to replace as current fuel level low. Still not sure why one tap was factory blanked but makes sense to have both flowing - won't use any more fuel as engine will only draw what it needs anyway.
My old Moto Morini had 2 taps and both were permanently on.
Had considered replacing fuel filter too until I saw where it was mounted and extremely cramped! This couldn't have been the cause of the pump noise as it sits after the pump in the fuel system cycle.
Just glad to have sorted noisy pump and in doing so discovered "odd" tap.

So there is a poor man's reserve available? This is the first I've heard of this.

Now, all I have to do is watch my trip meter so not to run out of fuel with one tap operating, and if unfortunately I do, I still have some reserve to get to the nearest gas station. Much better than running out with both taps operating, methinks!
 
New taps with filters fitted. Both allow fuel flow and pump whine totally gone. The new taps have a reserve setting so need to leave taps open on this setting to allow all fuel to be drawn by pump. Low fuel light works so not a problem - just need to re-fuel around 150 miles or so.
Pleased with my efforts and satisfied that both taps allowing fuel flow put less stress on fuel pump which is evident by lack of whining now!
