Mounting a Pelican Top Case?

I've got a big trip coming up soon, and was thinking how a top box would be really nice. I've got the Trax panniers, but not top box. Over on advrider, there seem to be a lot of guys using Pelican 1550's. Waterproof, practically indestructible, lockable, foam inserts. Question is how to mount it. Do you guys think the plastic "extension" on the Stelvio will be sufficient to hold it if bolted on? I was thinking a couple of U bolts or a bracket system of some sort might be good. Eventually, I'd like to do something removable, but I'm running out of ideas for the trip.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Under the plastic finishing strip there is a reasonable sturdy pair of metal arms that are bolted directly to the back end of the bike. If you remove the plastic strip you will see that there are some pre-drilled holes in the arms that would allow you to bolt the peli case directly to them in a pretty strong fashion.

I have used the same holes to mount the base plate for my trax case. My case although probably lighter than a peli case feels really solid on these arms so as long as you don't try and load up the box with lead or something else heavy, you'd be just fine.

Would be good to see some pics if you go for it.

I stared by drilling and adding some u bolts to the top of the case to use as tie downs. I figure I'm going to have to strap a spare gas can down at some point.

I'm not sure how much gas you're planning on putting on top of the Pelican, but fuel is heavy. I'd ensure your rear rack is rated to sustain the weight of a full trunk and a few gallons of gas. I'd also be concerned about the handling dynamics of the bike being significantly altered with so much weight mounted high up and far back of the center of gravity, especially in a crosswind.

Yes, I thought about that Corey. I am looking at a rotopax 1 gal can so it can lay flat. The bars that come extend from the back seat are pretty solid, and bolted on really well, so I think it can handle a gallon or so, which is about 6lbs. I am working on a metal plate inside the case to spread the load, but the pelican cases are pretty tough. I don't think it will be an issue. I plan on working on it today, so we'll see.

I also used the pelican 1500 case, which is only 7" high. They make bigger ones, but I am trying to keep minimal weight up there and just use it for camera gear, cell phone, etc - just the stuff that needs extra padding and needs to be kept dry. I'll report back as I get it done, but so far, I think it's going to work really well.
