Need a Tach Signal Tap

In the middle of my Rostra Cruise install on my Stelvio and need a location for a Tach signal. The phase sensor is available, but there are 3 wires that go to the ECU. 2 are labeled the same thing as Engine revolution signal at the ECU that was not very helpful unless either one is good. The third was labeled as an Anti jamming wire.

Is it easier to just tap into the coil. And if so, which wire. Assuming it is the one going back to the ECU which is the orange/green for the left coil according to the schematic.

I tried to figure out which wire at the back of the dash but the descriptions in the manual are a little vague. Could not find anything remotely indicating RPM.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Everything else is looking good so far on the install.

Yes, but can't say which is best. Perhaps just push the wire end into the connector first to test before permanently fastening it. Let us know what works.

Tach signal is good at the coil. The self diagnostics gave it a pass. Light flashes faster when RPMs increase.

Everything else passed diagnostics except the speed sensor. I was hoping it would work directly from the speed sensor but it does not.

Calculated the pulse to be 24,000 pulses/km by basically counting all the teeth on the ABS ring and dividing by the diameter of the tire. Thinking I may have the wrong theory going on on how it works. Anyone know what the pulse rate is for the sensors.

I tapped right into the positive wire on the sensor plug itself, at least according to the drawing. It was the yellow/brown wire from the rear sensor. Perhaps it only counts every second pulse??.

Anyone have any other ideas of where to get the signal from (ie. dash???). Failing that I will have to order the aux speed sensor. Was going for the factory look, but guessing that may not happen.

Can you tap into the sensor, rotate the tire and count the pulses?

Tried that from the sensor with my multimeter. Was all over the place. It is 48 at the sensor just from counting on the ABS ring. Just not the right signal for the cruise. Turns out the signal is on the ground at the sensor not the positive. Tried that one also with the CC unit. No dice.

I then tapped into the speed wire coming out of the abs unit to the dash. Worked fine. Basically just found the pulse rate by trial and error on the cc settings as the 48 pulses per revolution going into the abs from the sensor is not what comes out. Turned out to be 6 pulses per rev going to the dash for speed display which is the same as the non abs bikes.

Cruise is now working without issue. May need to fine tune the settings a little more but think I have it where I like it. Just finishing up the mount for the switch and waterproofing it. Well worth the money and time to install it.

Canuck, Are you going to do a DIY cheat sheet for all of us other Stelvio Owners who are wanting real cruise control. Please, please, please.

Sure. Let me see what I can put together for you. Did the fine tuning of the controller so all ready to go. Works better than I would have thought.

I was considering trading the the Stelvio on a GS or KTM SA for the upgrades Cruise Control etc. But after having a very close look at these bikes I remembered why I bought the Guzzi in the first place. Its a joy to work on and robust. So the Stelvio gets some upgrades this winter.
The Rostra Cruise is likley the first. Where did you fine a Wiring Diagram you could actually read?

Try this one. It is not 100% as there are some errors and the wiring colours are not always correct, but it is the best one that is currently available.

Will have something started this weekend on the installation specifics unless life gets in the way. Made some changes just need to document them. Nothing major, eliminated the Tach signal as a safety stop as it does not work. After some more reading (as the Rostra Cruise Manual must have been written by the same people that wrote for Guzzi), turns out that the tach signal shutoff is not used. Just rewired to the clutch switch and need to test. Unit still works great as always, just want to verify before I post.

As a start, the Cruise and parts that I used was

Controller: 250-1223
Switch: 250-3592
Relays (3): 250-4382

You will need three relays. One for the brake switch since our bike use LED, 2nd for the enable light on the switch (if you get the switch without the enabled light you don't need this) and the 3rd was used as a switched power source for the unit wired directly to the battery. All the relays fit nicely next to the control unit in the storage compartment under the seat.

I got them all from Summit Racing. Great place to deal with and shipping to Canada was cheap. It was $50 to ship including the tax on the purchase, duty and shipping. When you removed the tax, it was like $9 to ship.
