The headlight stopped working the other day, but I got it to work by hitting the horn a couple times. However the alt light came on but then went out when the light came on.

Now the headlight won't work, but I can it to illuminate by holding the flash button down. Intermittently when the ignition it turned on all the idiot lights work, other times none will come on and still other times the alt light comes on and stays on.

I took the headlight switch off the bar and cleaned it, but it looked good and didn't make a difference when I put it back together.

My suspicion is that its got a bad relay. The schematic shows a relay for the lights, but I'll be dammed if I can figure out where it is, any ideas?

From the sound of things it is time to disconnect all electrical connectors, clean them and re-assemble. Start with the connector for the left had switch assembly. The light relay should be under one of the side covers if memory serves me correctly. These types of flaky results can happen with age, and moisture.
