Norge No Start

Rewiring the start relay, if it hasn't been domne already, will help. But even then I did have a problem like this on the Norge. Turned out to be sticky dry grease in the solenoid, I cleaned it out and put some oil in there instead, and all has been good so far.

I perused the shop manual and saw nothing to show me how. Is the starter removal straight forward and are there any tricks to dismantling the solenoid? I remember doing one once, on what I forget but probably a Honda. Unbolting the solenoid then pulling it apart broke an internal wire that made the unit junk. New part was then purchased. So I figure ask first on this job. It is winter and I am trying to get in all my pre-riding season maintenance.

You don't need to take anything apart, and don't go near the starter, it's the starter relay you want, it's behind the RHS panel. Cut the yellow wire that goes to pin 3 on the solenoid and join it with a wire to go directly to the battery.

All the information you need is in the first post of this thread. Don't read any further.

I already did the starter relay rewire, which I thank those who who told me immensely as I had not a clue. Since I have seen several people warn about the solenoid hanging up I am going to fix it now, over the winter, rather than have it fail who knows where. My faith in this bike has been shaken way more than once.

Update:

My Breva with the 20 year old rebuilt Valeo starter has been starting my bike without problems for about 8 months since I swapped it out. But this last weekend it didn't start the bike, solenoid hung up, it sat for a week.

I recently read an tip about the use of silicone grease on electrical connectors in the MGNOC newsletter, sorry can't remember the date or the author, but it said don't use silicone because of it corrosive affect but to use Deoxit by Caig instead. Deoxit dissolves oxidation, prevents oxidation and improves conductivity. I applied it to the solenoid wire and it started up after the second try. It has started several times since then.

The reason I hesitate installing the additional relay is that my buddy's Breva has not had the same starting problem and the main difference between our bike is that mine was stored in a barn by the PO. And I took the plastic starter cover off my bike.

So I'm going to treat the battery connectors, and the rest starter related connector and see how long this lasts. goes.
