Norge SERVICE! warning

I did go for a ride on January 1, 2010, with the Richmond BMW Riders crew. Had a brief Uh-Oh moment. I turned the key, got the lights dance, but when I hit the starter, everything just tunred off. No click, no whine, nothing. Ugh. So, I took off my layers of gear, thinking I had a blown fuse. Taking off my helmet, heated gloves, earplugs, balaclava, and jacket, I turned the switch again. Got the Red triangle and the SERVICE! warning. Ack!

So I turned the key off, took a deep breath, and turned the key again. There it was again: Red triangle and the SERVICE! warning. Throwing caution to the wind (and thinking that it was just the cold cold cold weather), I pressed the starter.

The Red triangle and the SERVICE! warning went away and the bike idled. Checked the alternator menu item--11.7 amps. Low but ok. Now, I've had this on my Battery Tender all through the cold weather. Last rode the bike two weeks prior.

But I thought, what the hey, and put the gear back on, backed out of the Garagemahito, and went to the RBMWR meeting. Bike put out between 12.7 & 13 amps pretty consistenly.

So it goes. Hmmmm..

I periodically check my the battery voltage on my Breva using a digital meter directly on the Battery terminals and consistently get a 0.6 Volt higher reading than the dashboard display, it was a 1.0 volt difference until I cleaned the terminals and a cable connector under the seat going from the battery up to the dash.

I don't know what the Italians do to measure battery voltage but it is usually not even close. I recently installed an Argus Battery Bug (http://www.argusanalyzers.com) on the bike just for this reason. The battery voltage on the Norge display shows a consistent 13.2 volts while I am riding. I have my hand grips on high and my heated vest is pulling a few amps as well. The Bug showed a battery voltage of 13.8 volts for a difference of 0.6 volts which is a significant amount.
A note about batteries: Do not try and measure battery voltage right after disconnecting the charger. All that you are measuring is the static charge and this is not accurate. Preferably, wait 24-48 hours and then measure the volatge. A fully charged battery with 100% capacity should measure about 12.8 volts. For every 0.1 volts below 12.8, there is a corresponding 10% loss of battery capacity. A charged battery that consistently measures less than 12.4 volts is a candidate for replacement. I returned from my ride on Sunday evening and the bike has been sitting in the garage since. Right now, the Battery Bug is indicating 12.8 volts. A good battery but the Bug is also telling me that I only have 32% cranking life left.
I also use a CTEK US 800 battery charger for winter storage (http://www.ctek.com). I like this unit a lot more than the standard Battery Tender.

Check positive battery terminal for corrosion. Your symptoms exactly match mine. I had to remove the cable, clean everything, reassemble and apply battery protective spray.

The red service light at startup is also symptomatic of a bad oil pressure sender.

Seb: what Battery Bug are you using? The BB-SBM12-PS is listed for motorcycles when the battery is only used for starting, but if I read the diagram correctly, one has to use the BB-DCM12-300 for all AGM batteries (our case). Sadly, the latter is more than 3x the price of the former...

I am in fact using the BB-SBM12-PS and it is mounted on my dash. If you read the tech specs for this unit, you will see that it also supports AGM batteries as well as the others.

Going to try a ride today, but reading other stuff I found this from Gerbing: "Note: it is important that the garment not be plugged in or the controller turned on until the power source is on (i.e., motorcycle running). Always turn the controller off or disconnect the power lead before stopping the motorcycle. "

And, of course, I'd had everything connected prior to starting. Ugh.

Weather is improving (5ºC, sunny), so I went out and checked my battery earlier. 12.56V directly across the terminals, after a month sitting in the cold (battery disconnected since the 19th of december I guess). Not too bad. Starting was a bit difficult (had to hold the accelerator for quite long), but that's probably to be expected, cold after so much inactivity.
I wheeled her into the garage her at work, she's now on the trickle charge of a nice big charger (negative leads disconnected again just to prevent any kind of damage).

I would have liked to get a service light for something, though. Found the big bracket holding my Skidmarx hugger to the CARC broken. I know it's happened, but can't recall if there's been a redesign, or whether there are hugger alternatives nowadays.
(For now, I ran a pair of zip-ties around the CARC, holding the bracket down, not a very elegant or even reassuring solution  )
