I am now looking to run a lower viscosity engine oil after the full mods on my V85TT. The shop manual says 10w60 and does not give an ambient temp range for different grades of oil. I can see the 60 as needed with stock fuelling as the engine( and oil) will be running hotter and the 60 would be needed for piston ring seal. But now that the engine will be running cooler a 20w50 or a 10w50 oil should be able to be run without losing lubrication on the rings, possibly seal the rings better by not having to try and scrape heavy oil off the cylinder walls and keep the fuel where it belongs ( in the combustion chamber) and not in your crank case. It may also give a couple of HP increase to the motor. I do not run in ambient temps below 32 ( unless i am caught in a stupid moment) and rarely see about 98- 100 degrees.
For you guys that have done the mods have you seen a need, or tried, a lower viscosity oil? In reality for this plan to work i should really be running some oil testing to see if the 60 allows fuel into the crank case after the mods and if it does switch to a 50 and sample. The more power and better breathing of the engine (plus weight loss from the cat removal) will be great but this mod should also effect the engine oil choice as well.
At this point i am running the Liqui- moly 10w60 and that oil needs to be special ordered in. Finding a 20w50 oil will be easier to source as Amsoil, Lucas, Royal Purple and Motul all carry a 20w50. Castrol 10w50 4T oil even seems easier to get a hold of than a 10w60.
Has anyone done any testing to see how hot the oil actually gets during a ride to be able to need a 60 oil?
