Oil in the clutch housing

I’ll post pictures when I can, but there is a small amount of oil coming from the lower right hand side of the clutch housing.

My last couple of oil changes were a bit rushed, and I didn’t bother to clean all the oil off of the engine before I started riding, and I’m hoping that it’s just a little bit of oil migration from the underside of the engine that is now visible along the seam.

Worst case scenario it’s a crankshaft oil seal either on the engine side or the transmission side of the clutch leaking oil into the clutch housing. Which would require a full engine removal to diagnose fully.

Has anyone else had the crankshaft seals go bad on their bikes? Thanks.

Ps I’ve just ticked over 10,000 miles on my v85tt.

Hopefully your inclination is correct.

What I see all the time is overfilling of the crankcase, which raises the internal pressure of the crankcase substantially and causes the rear main seal to blow out and/or begin to leak. Once it starts leaking, the only remedy is to renew it which is a big job. Good luck!

For the V85tt, There is also a cap for the "piston cooling nozzle" in the (right or left?) rear of the engine block. The same cap and nozzle is also in the (right or left?) front for the opposite side piston. The best thing to do is locate the leak, and it could be as simple as something in the valley. I know the oil pressure sensors used to be there on the older V7's. I'm interested in hearing your resolution.

Not sure if this is relevant but on my old bmw r1150rt. I switched to synthetic oil and it “blew a seal”. I had posted it on a bmw forum and some wise guy posted a video with monkeys at a bar telling the joke about “blew a seal”. 😂
