Oil leak... from the starter?

yeah
Just got the bike, but the new to me 2009 Stelvio isn't being obedient... Once the bike warms up, it seems I am leaking oil from a weep hole on the starter - is that possible or am I misdiagnosing? Is this a known issue?

Not from the starter there is no oil there. It is from somewhere else and you are seeing it by the starter.

Ugh. I hope this is not the main oil seal leak... what am I looking for, if it is?

... So if the inside of the starter housing and the starter gear are covered in oil that's probably... Bad?

Could be rear main seal. If it is, it shouldn't get to the clutch. Gearbox oil is what can get to the clutch if the front seal is leaking, or the clutch push rod seals. First determine if it is engine oil, or gearbox. The smell usually tells you if it is gearbox oil. Pull the starter and see what you can see. If nothing conclusive, go for a ride, then park on center stand. There should be a drain hole at the front of the gearbox bell housing. Collect the oil that trips out and see what it is. If no oil from there, it could be engine oil that is leaking from somewhere else and becoming evident at the starter. The thing with oil leaks is it travels and finding the origin can be difficult.

ok I will check and see what I can figure out - man I thought that bikes after 2005 or so didn't have these kinds of problems anymore... its like owning a really heavy Zane Laverda!

You may want too take the bottom fairing off and make sure it is not blowing back from a loose grub screw on the cylinder heads.
