Ok to use Maxmia Racing Shock Fluid in Front forks?

I purchased a litre of Maxima Racing Shock Fluid 7W for use in the front forks of my Moto Guzzi V7. It is important to understand that I've replaced the internals of the forks with Andreani cartridges. I selected this product because it met all the viscosity requirements of the cartridge inserts and it had a very high Viscosity Index (meaning it will retain its characteristics over a wide temperature range). But now I'm second guessing my purchase. This product is intended for use in rear shocks. So, will it be OK to use this dampening fluid in the front forks? Or should I swap for Maxima Racing Fork Fluid at the same viscosity?

That's a question for Maxima, as I'm sure they've engineered distinct properties/additives for each. That said, (suspension) oil is oil of the proper viscosity.

Thanks. I sent the question off to Maxima and see what they come back with as an answer.

I felt that dampening fluid would be mostly the same base, with additives/conditioners the manufacturer combined to extend the qualities of the oil in harsher applications. From my reading, shock oil undergoes higher stresses than fork oil and is formulated differently. But in the end, as you point out "oil is oil of the proper viscosity", so shock oil should work in the forks. Some people even promote the use of ATF in forks, which is totally outside the intended application.

RBM, on the older cartridge fork Guzzis ( 850T to CA II) ATF was specified by the factory. All the oil did was lubricate the slider. BTW, those early cartridges didn't do much either. They were about as effective as a screen door unit!!

To tie up this thread, I received the following response to my question to Maxima tech support:

Robert,
Shock fluids and fork fluids are very similar. The main difference being that the shock fluid contains a larger amount of polymer (VI Improver) to help the fluid viscosity stay consistent in high temperature applications. So essentially a Shock Fluid is overbuilt for a fork application being that a fork does not experience the high temperatures that a shock does.

You can use a shock fluid in a fork but it would be considered overkill for the intended application.

Let me know if you have any more questions and thank you for choosing Maxima!
Sincerely,

Tim Schaeffer
