Petrol or Gasoline?

I've been wondering, probably because it's a bit too cold for bike riding, why petroleum spirit is known as petrol in the UK and gasoline in the US (and no doubt other countries). Was it a trade or brand name there? I know the derivation of petrol, it comes from petrology or the study of rocks, but where did the name gasoline come from? Any geologists or petroleum engineers out there? :(

Petrol or gasoline is fine for me until someone start saying “gas”

To make it worse, when someone say “the motor need more gas…”

I’ll interpret it as “an electric motor needs some kind of gas (hydrogen, oxygen… etc)

Phang

I thought it was fuel, :? but what would I know, I just love "givin it the berries"

Brand names can become generic names quite easily.

In Britain loudspeakers are often called "Tannoys." In Canada, the headache medication asa is usually called "Aspirin."

Same thing with gasoline or "Gasserleen" as they call it around here (Lanark, Ontario.)

As everbody round here knows, "benzine" (locally written as "bensin") would be the proper word.... ;)

Gasoline originally referred to any liquid offered for sale, sold or used as the fuel for a gasoline-powered engine, but does not include diesel fuel or liquefied gas. Methanol racing fuel would have been classed as a type of gasoline.

Forget petrol, gas(oline) and what not... I propose that real Guzzisti should use only the Italian word for it: BENZINA

I thought gasoline was just a bastardization of gas-oil generically referring to petroleum products that come out the ground. Then through usage became filtered to a specific type of hydrocarbon.

We still use petrol here but I'm good with any name I just wish it wasn't so dammed expensive.

My bug bear is the use of motor for engine. Its just me, I was always taught that an engine was a device which converted chemical energy to mechanical work and a motor was a device which converted electrical energy to mechanical work.

I have got over it as the years have gone by

In modern Greek, we have "petreleo"(where e sound eh)=petroleum which we use for diesel/crude etc and "vehnzeena" grammatically spelled BENZINA which is gasoline most probably from the italian word too.

I can't figure out why they don't call it an Enginecycle.

Good point, in the UK we also refer to vehicles as motorised. Hadn't thought of that one.

Just one of these ambiguities I guess. Anyway I'm going off topic, so I'll get ma coat

I believe petrol is better than gasoline ,it increases the engines performance!

Can't believe this thread's still going after six months. Haven't any of you got homes to go to?
