Hi everyone,

I'm new to this on line communication. Is there some protocol about how to refer to people when replying to a post. Many of the user names, though purposeful, seem kind of silly, awkward, or just too long to use in quick and familiar reply. Maybe this is irrelevant as currently, the trend in popular culture is not to abbreviate in familiarity. David's stay David, and Robert's stay Robert.

So, If you don't know the individuals name, is their expectation that you call them by their user name? By a portion of it? Please advise, as using a name is a huge part of developing rapport; but maybe thats the whole point of this online stuff; no real rapport necessary. I'm happy to play along, however the wind is blowing. Let me know what you think.

Timothy St. John

Timothy, I'd say your outlook is correct. The abstract names are a bit silly to me, but if they want anonymity, we will just have to use them. Also I'd say you posted this in the correct area.

Timothy,

Many of us, though we use silly names (a story behind mine but that might wait till another day) include our first names in the signature. That way we can be addressed correctly, as each of us see fit.

Oh!

I just now noticed the signature, or rather, your name at the bottom. Thanks Tony! I'll have to go back and check how many other respondent's signature/names went unnoticed by me.

That being the case, my apologies to anyone whose offer of their name in communication with me was not accorded suitable consideration.

Timothy

PS I didn't mean to suggest that anyones user names were in fact silly, although on the face of it that is what I said. I should have said that I feel funny employing them.

Timothy, no offence was intended nor was there any taken. Silly is my word, but I have been called Oz and Tony many times on this and other forums. Given my time again, I would not have used Oz1200Guzzi, just my name, but I am consistently known as both on the boards I visit, so nothing will change from my end - it is what it is.

Oh, and by the way, welcome to the forum.
:whew:

This posting caused me to add my name in the signature. Abbienormal is the made up name of the brain donor in Mel Brooks "Young Frankenstein" when Eyegore dropped the scientists brain and he grabbed the abnormal brain.

A long time ago on a Northern California Fly Fishing board I my then little son came up with my "nickname" because I didn't bring fish home very often.

Out of habit I've kept it so that "Homeland Security" can keep track of me.

Mark,

I like these stories! Thanks for sharing. Anyone else like to explain their 'handle'? Mine Is just my name. Next!

Oh all right, when I first started looking seriously at the 1200 Sport, I joined the 1200SportBB - which has since gone, baby gone - there was another user called PCGuzzi. As it was an international board/collection/familiga, I came up with Oz1200Guzzi (Oz is Orstralia, 1200 is what the sign says on the side of the bike, and Guzzi is, well, you know Guzzi).

I was naive at the time - still am -but it's stuck...

Another nice thing each of us can do is fill in the location details in your profile, such as town/city/village, state/provence/prefecture/arondissment etc, and the country you are in - then we all can learn about our individual geography if we care to...

I use to use name Tralfaz for passwords, because the reference was too obscure to fathom.

Does anyone know where in 60's pop culture that name comes from without resorting to Googling it? Use to be not.

Timothy St. John

P.S. Signatures don't show on my handheld device, so I can't do you the courtesy of replying to that name If your actual name shows there.
