Rear light - LEDs out

Sorry - another question...

I have a couple of LEDs not working on my rear light. Am I right in thinking that the rear light cluster isn't user servicable??!

If so, has anyone cracked one open? I'll bet the LEDs are ok and it's just a couple of dry joint or something. Even if it's the LEDs failed I can pop a couple of new ones in.

I'll be keeping an eye on this one, I have the same problem. Bike made it through MOT (UK annual safety check) because there is more than 50% working but it looks crap... £140 for a new one  , been keeping my eye on flea-bay but no luck as yet.

Ah, good to know about the MOT - was thinking that would be a problem. Still want to fix it though, but £140 for the sake of a couple of LEDs!!!

Got to figure out how to get the unit off the bike first!

Will keep you informed and any hints welcome :)

Getting the unit off the bike is easy enough, from memory the rear seat needs to come off to get at two of bolts. Again from memory it's a bit tight where it plugs into the loom. The unit is sealed, I didn't even attempt to open it and even if I get it open I wouldn't know what to do.

Thanks for the info - I'll take it off one day soon and have a poke. It looks like it's assembled from the lens side. If the lens is glued all the way round it looks like it'll be a no-go. If the lens clips on though, we may be in luck. If I do get inside it should be fixable, so I'll let you know how I get on.

If it's two pieces and glued most of them on other bikes use a hot glue type compound.
A low oven will loosen the hot glue and the two halves separated, most of the headlight assemblies are the same way.

Does M-G do it that way? I don't know, yet...

There is a new one on Ebay Iltaly for approx
£115.00 if any good?

Put this ebay item no in the Ebay uK site and it will take you to the item?

Mine actually came apart because they hadn't used enough glue. There are also small clips molded in there , but those don't do much. I used a bit of RTV to glue it back. Never thought about it being hot glue.

What's inside? is it worth ripping apart? can it be fixed once in there?

So many questions and no answers...

Thanks for the eBay link, I'll wait and see if I can crack mine open or not before buying a new one, but good to know they're out there for not as bad as I thought sort of money. Still a lot to fix a couple of LEDs!

Might try and get the cluster apart this weekend, but might just be riding as the bike is new to me and I can't keep off it - just gotta think of somewhere to ride to!

What did you find inside, Wayne? Is the circuit board removable? I'm sure it will be repairable of it can be disassembled. But then, I'm usually wrong...

No idea. My lens had a crack, and it was loose. I wanted to stop the crack and strengthen it, and glue it back in. I didn't attempt to get to the pc board.
