Hi it's me again.
I'm starting to work on the rear wheel of my 75 850T and I wanted some opinions on some things. I noticed this on the brake lining. It looks like the lining peeled away on the side ( circled in the yellow lines.) Is this OK ?

The splines look to me to be fine but want to be sure so I wanted to ask you guys what you think.
Splines
Where is a good place to send the rear drive to have it checked out and the seal replaced ?

That lining does look suspicious from your picture. Run some sand paper or Scotchbrite along the area where the brake shoes would engage. If smooth you should be OK. The outer seal is relatively easy to replace. The inner seal is usually the problem also, especially on a bike that old. To replace that inner seal special tools are usually needed to remove the race for the inner needle bearing so you can replace the seal. Also inspect the ends of the ring gear carrier where they contact the seals to make sure they are smooth and won't damage a seal. When you do install the wheel, be sure to grease those splines to keep them good. You won't be using the rear brake much as it is too easy to lock the rear wheel. Mostly will be used when stationary such as holding on a hill.

For sure I don't have the special tools or skill to disassemble the ring gear carrier. Would like to know where I could send the unit to have the work done.

Easy.

Curtis Harper. Harper Moto Guzzi

Google them. Look at website. Click SERVICE.

Nobody alive has more skills at that. Mike Harper (>80 yrs old) as far as I know, still goes into the shop every day.

I don't believe that there is anything wrong with your wheel. The edge of your "lining" or brake drum does look different than the 850-T wheel I have here now, if it was a defect it wouldn't have a repeating "pattern" around the drum, it would be more random. Looks like part of the manufacturing process to me.

Scott: Mike Harper passed quite a while ago.

Oh I didn’t know. My bad. Thanks for the info.

Curtis is very much alive though, yes?

I just knew that everybody I ever knew who needed a rebuild of a final drive or anything related to that, sent their stuff to Harpers.

For what its worth I had issues sealing the rear drive unit . Leaking ( weeping , oozing , like about 1 drip every day ) thru the seals ....new ones . I did give everything relevant a good measure up, checked where the seal bears on the gear and all ok . The seals both felt sorta loose and I could see why they might not seal all that well . In the end I asked my supplier to get me a different brand of seals and they were a slightly tighter fit and it hasnt leaked since

The rear of my bike was coated in oil at the time. Was not until I disassembled the whole bike for a complete do over that I found the reason for all the oil. The output shaft seal of the transmission was worn out. Decided to have the rear drive seals replaced too.
