I hate to start an oil thread but my good dealer who initially told me it was ok on my old bike is not in business anymore. I know the manual says 10W-60 Agip oil and I Used that in my California 1400. I have now sold that and purchased a 2012 Norge 8V. I always ran 20W-50 Amsoil full synthetic in my 2007 Norge 4V. Is anybody running similar in an 8V motor? The Agip never impressed me with it's almost grease consistancy and I have a preference for the Amsoil. I find it interesting they recommend their 60wt for the 1400s but no recommendation for the Norge. I sometimes have to knock ice off the bike in the morning before a ride so a straight 60 is not what I think I want.
Yes Todd. When I get home and have the info I'll add it to the registry. :) Guzzi #3 even if some friends think I should be commited.
Anything else I should check on an 8V with 2,900 miles on it would be appreciated.

Rudy,

I have the same engine in my Griso; my brother has a 2014 Norge.

The service manuals for both say 10W/60. I cannot imagine using anything else.

BTW, trust you have confirmed yours has roller tappets or has been "rollerized?"

Best,

Bill

P.S. Brother Michael and I will likely be in the same ward with you when committed. Michael is on his fifth new Guzzi; I, on my 4th, and still have three of those.

Use 10w60. The engine is designed to use oil that is light light (base weight) and can take that much heat (top weight). Use a 20w base, and you will potentially under-lubricate when the engine is cold. Use a weight with a 50 rated top, and it may coke when stressed by high temps.

There are many reports of mysterious problems with the 1200 2v and 4v motors, problems that suddenly ended after the person reporting them was asked 'are you using 10w60?' - and they were not.

I read quite a few of the posts on the Norge and I did not know the flat tappet problem was applicable to them. I doubt it was rollerized. Nobody rode the thing. I am the third owner and only 2,900 miles in 4 years.

Ok. I looked through the threads some more and I see the comments on a few dying. Mine is a 2012 so they may live or may not. I went ahead and ordered the Agip 10-60 for it. I will just have to keep my ears open for any noises in the future. I was told the dealer did the last service but that was at least a year and a half ago so I want to change the oil. Picked up a Purolater filter for it but now I will wait for the oil.

All flat-tappet 8v's will die. Some die sooner than others, but damage to DLC become apparent relatively soon. Mine showed before 12K.

Recommend that you confirm that yours has flatties or rollers soonest. My brother had a '12 Norge that had rollers, but as that change occurred, as I recall, mid-model-year, not all were.

If you have rollers, lucky you. If not, and the PO knew ... well, I'll leave inferences to you.

The worst-case-scenario is that it needs about $2K in parts and labor. Piaggio might pick up cost of former.

Not sure where you are in Ohio, but I just drove through there on way to Rose Farm Classics in Woodstock, Illinois, to pick up my Griso after Guzzi magician Jim Barron “rollerized” it.

Some pix of that if you care: https://bill-and-kathi.smugmug.com/My-Great-Guzzi-Returns/n-w4wTfn/

As usual, Best seen in “full screen” with captions.

I love my Norge; my brother is on his third! Best wishes to you with yours.

Bill

Just notice recently that 10w60 is recommend for my Norge. I was running 5w50 full synthetic. By some luck I had a gallon of Motul lying around and know what, it was 10w60 and what else = They say (Motul) that it is the recommended oil for Moto Guzzi, KTM and MV Agusta on the back label. Soo... I will see how things goes... I'm in the 80,000kms nowadays.
