Refilling front forks?

I got the fork oil out of my 81 CX 100 LM... But am unclear how to put new stuff in... At the top there is a knurled cap that covers something like a filler valve for a tire.. There is an 11 or 12 mm hex kind of sunk in there... Do I get that out and put the fluid in there? Do I have to worry about air or bleeding the forks? Would the guzziology book help me with this kind of thing? Thanks for any help... Cheers, John

On most of the bikes that I have worked on the large nut at the top has to be undone. easier when the forks are out or that you can get to the top. then make sure that you also drain all oil out. The ideal is to have both at a equal level like dipping your engine oil. this way you will get the level both correct. if you post a picture maybe can advise further.

I just did fofk seals on by 85 Cali 2 based café racer. The forks have a sealed internal dampening "shock". 60 cc s of ATF is used for lubrication only.
You bike has different forks but maybe the same internal sealed shocks? If so......
Support the bike under the engine, carefully......Loosen top nuts on forks then drop jack slightly so the internals pop up a few inches....Pour in oil slowly , put it back together.

So I seem to have the FAC Air Fork dampers on this bike... I am guessing I pull out the air valve and then the rubber air bladder, then lower the wheel until the dampers come up a bit and slowly add fork oil around the damper... does that sound about right? Anything I should be careful about (more than usual..) Thanks!

No. Do not mess with the air valve or rubber bladder. You're not adding oil to the damper - that's a sealed unit. You're trying to refill the forks. Do as Rough Edge Racing says: place the bike on the centerstand, support the front of the bike under the sump with a jack, thread the damper caps out of the tops of the fork tubes (both at the same time, evenly as possible), lower the jack and fill the fork in the gap between the damper and fork tube.

Thanks, I looked at it again and saw the 32mm nut to loosen. I have to get the right wrench before I can loosen it. My 1 1/4" didn't work... I don't suppose I could squirt the 2 oz in from the drain plug could I?
I really appreciate the help... Cheers, John
