Removing Stelvio gas tank and fuel line service??

Thanks,

I'd assumed that the material was the same throughout, but normal FI hose must have different rubber inside. I'll go look for the Gates.

Re: Re:Removing Stelvio gas tank and fuel line service??

A follow-up on the performance of the modified fuel level sending unit:
FAfter a fill-up, the fuel gauge now reads full till about 65-70 miles, when it changes to two thirds, changes to 1/3 at about 110 miles, reserve signals 25 or so miles later(approx 1.2 gal remaining in tank. Now, it's reasonably accurate and I'm pleased with the mod, that is, it worked the way I hoped it would. Still could do with a couple more segments on the bar graph, but, hey, it's Italian! Why should it completely make sense??

A further comment on ther fuel sending unit replacement. I got two warranty replacement senders (Guzzi originally sent entire fuel pump assemblies to replace faulty senders, but this got expensive really quick, so now they just send the sending unit only). I had hopes that the sending unit had been modified to improve it's performance. It appears that it hasn't, just luck of the draw whether you get one that allows the float to get to the top to read FULL.

I went to the trouble to replace the one on the '06 Breva a couple years ago, so I have one of the complete assemblies on the bench. I've had the float mechanism out and apart several times learning what makes it tick. In order to get the unit to read over the entire range of the tank, there are two "helper springs" in the tube, one below the float, retarding it's fall to the lowest point, and one above the float, retarding it's rise to the highest point.
the unit in my Stelvio will OCCASIONALLY read full, so I interpreted that the float is only being held back SLIGHTLY too much. I clipped the top set of pre-compressed coils off the upper spring, shortening it overall by about 1/8". I'm counting on this allowing the float to rise the extra smidgeon it needs to real FULL all the time. We'll see...

Oh, BTW, the new replacement float unit has the same number stamp as the original. My bet is that they haven't changed a thing, just cheapened the warranty replacement expenses. That's why I opted to tinker with the spring. I don't want to pull this sucker apart again!!

If you decide to try this, remember to reassemble by inverting the assembly as you replace the cap. There are two spring contacts in the cap that ride corresponding contacts inside the upper part of the float. The only way to get everything aligned is to turn it upside down so that gravity keeps the float in the right place till it's all assembled. Other approaches to reassembly WILL expand your working cuss-word vocabulary.

John,

MG offers a upgrade kit for this purpose that is free of charge, Speakers should be able to supply you with the parts. Kit includes new fuel filter, hose (two pieces) and clamps.

BTW, BE VERY CAREFUL tightening the bolts back up on the assembly when re-installing it in the tank. My MG wrench set his torque wrench at half the foot pounds required and snapped off two of the bolts. MG covered it under warranty but had a real heart burn. That tank and its funny design is very expensive.

MG should have forgot about the glove box and made the fuel tank larger. They could have given us a small pouch to hang off the handle bars for gloves, sun glasses and the like.

My Stelvio is in the shop for its first service. I am having them take a look at the fuel gauge (not showing the third bar) and asked them to install the upgraded hoses from MG while in there . Is the MG kit a good repair, or does it fail too? Did they use a better quality hose in the upgrade?

Thanks,

Doug
