Road surface will be a factor to a degree but rear braking? The only time I use the rear is for steering really and if I'm having to do a REALLY hard stop.
I DON'T ride very hard but I DO use all the tyres, no point in paying for 'em if you aren't gunna use 'em is there?
As I said I threw the original Metzlers away after 1700Km because they were HORRIBLE not because they were worn out. Since then I've done 16.5K km and been through four rears and three fronts all Avons, all run at the recommended 36/37 front and 42/42 rear set cold and checked by the 10% rule.
The Griso, mine at least, just eats tyres. The Pilot Road 2's I have on my Mana are lasting very well but the Mana is ridden very differently to the Griso. I'm hoping I can get better life out of the PR2's on the Griso as the Avons while nice are a bit spendy when you're only getting 3 to 4 thousand Km out of 'em!!!
Oh, I replace my tyres when they are down to the wear bars or they start feeling bad. If i wanted to I could probably run 'em a bit longer without 'em bursting but who wants to ride something that feels like a hippo on a skateboard?
