Rough Riding Griso 8v - Help!

My Griso 8v has 5,000 Ks on it, the No.2 map installed and has been running beautifully, until last week.

At the end of a long ride and after coming off a bit of highway running when I twisted the throttle strongly - like starting off at stop lights, instead of the usual smooth power build, the opposite - power loss would occur. Yesterday I took it out on another long ride - 300 ks - and more than one full tank of fresh gas. Same thing... not always, but sometimes, usually when aggressively accelerating, it seems to act like I was flooding it with too much gas. If I let off the throttle, it recovers and I can accelerate as normal. But as you can see,,, I'm not a mechanic, and have no idea what's happening here...

I will be taking my bike to my dealer next weekend - as the parts for the camshaft re-call are finally in. I hope my mechanic will know what this other problem is - but I thought I'd report it here and see if I could get some opinions or list of things to ask my dealer to check.

There are three things required to get an engine to run.

1. air.

2. spark

3. fuel

I suppose the first thing to check are the plugs. If the spark is weak, it may not be able to ignite the rush of fuel/air.

If the bike can run at highway speeds with no problem, i would imagine a lack of air is not your culprit.

This leaves you with two options. fuel and air. If the bike has no problems other than accelerating hard, you can narrow it down to the processes that occur under those conditions.

The throttle body opens, the ignition map goes into open loop, it gets a lot of fuel, and the spark timing advances. So unless you have had a mechanical failure, (which it sounds like you have not) I would immagine it is a spark issue, or maybe your computer is going nuts and needs to be reset or something.

It could also be a failing sensor. Given the timing of things, i would imagine it's a sensor that doesnt run in closed loop. those would be your TPS, your engine temp sensor, your rpm sensor, and your air temp sensor.

Somebody told me that you need to remove the extra 4 valves, it will run good then! OK... no they didn't say that, I figured since my bike has a big screech when I take off, I might as well torment someone else...

Listen, given everything is all gizmoed up to a puter and such, it can't be all that easy to fix it with a bobby pin anymore so that means somebody will need to hook up life support and after the MRI is done you'll know what's up. I doubt it's terminal...

Thanks for the advice and the crack about the extra 4 valves - nice one! I'll warn my dealer that he'll need to dust off his Axone this weekend. I suspect he doesn't use it much - mainly because the printed instructions in Japanese are very sparse. I've been with him as he's wrestled with the interface!

I'll report back with the findings in the following week.
Fortunately I have my wife's bike (v7c) to ride whilst the G is getting fix.

Has it been wet? Most likely is shorting out of one plug, this is more likely if it has been wet but MArio in Perth says the original caps are so shitty that he's seen the spark blow clean through the rubber even without the abuse caused when you try and pull the buggers out.

Get the bike in the garage with the lights out at night, mist around the plug caps with the covers off with a mister like you'd use for spraying clothes before you iron them and fire the bike up and watch for blue sparks!!!

Hmmm - it is the rainy season here, but I haven't been out in it much. But I have washed it few times - but not with strong sprayer. Anyway, I'll pass on that idea to my mechanic - and after tested I'll report back here. Thanks for input.

Hi Nick,

I hope your Griso is fine by now. Just noticed the discussion today.
As Pete suggest, it is good to check the plug caps and cables.

Last week my Griso had problems, one cylinder stopped every now and then. Problem was the spark. Worst was when it didn't start at all until cooling, or what ever, for an hour. At some gas level the spark escaped easier, so the gas position really impacts.

I took the spark plug caps off, and there were burned holes. Now I have rounds of rubber tape around the plugs and sheet of silicon under the corner of plug cap.

Griso has resistor spark plugs and also resistors in the caps. No wonder the spark wants to find a shortcut. I wonder if Guzzi has also plug cables withour resistor, as they are changing the caps and cables with the cam shaft recall. My cables have been changed, but these have resistors anyway. Now I am looking for a set without resistors.
