Rough Running After Service

NO, NO, NO! No f'n wood. Use a plastic straw. Do not try to turn from the front. It's a wet stator and you will mess up the seal. Use sixth gear with both plugs out. Check the plug boot to see that it's screwed on tight first. Then the plugs. One might have been damaged, cracked, mis gapped, not put on tight, when installed.
 
Vagrant is 100% correct. Please never insert wood into your spark plug hole.

Use the big, long and thick plastic straws which you can find at any well stocked convenience gas market that sells fountain drinks and Slurpee / Icee drinks. Just cut off the spoon end with scissors.

It goes without saying, but somebody will do it anyway, but never stick the straw into a hot engine. Your engine needs to be stone cold when setting valves.

The other point I have said repeatedly is that to properly set the valves on any 4V engine, you must use two sets of feeler gauges, one for each valve, and you set the gaps at the same time. Otherwise they will always be different from each other.

Yea, I've already determined that one of the plug boots is loosely fitted. I get a real light snap with it while the others take a bit of effort to release. I have limited garage space, time, and still haven't figured out a safe lift solution. I don't think I'm built for this. Going to ruminate and may consider ending this experiment.
 
On some of the 8V motors you can dislodge the spark plug cap from between the fins in head & push up on it. Works on 1200's.

on a side note, you don't actually need to lift the bike, I did mine with one of those roller wheel cleaners under the rear wheel as I also didn't have access to a lift at the time. I mean not ideal but you could even roll the bike to get it to the right position. (desperate times, call for desperate measures lol)
