Norge 07 has now done around 32k and since first service has only had SIN75/90 in box and CARC
Have two fresh unopened bottles of Penrite HYPOID 80W-90
Is this considered a better oil and will it be ok in box and CARC or should I stay with SIN75
Don't care either way it's just that their sitting here unused - so why throw them out
Looked at spec sheets, they appear similar, but am just not sure

Thanks Paul

Stick with all SIN - Engine, gearbox and Cardan drive. Remember that the engine takes SIN 10!

I'd for sure use the Hypoid 80w-90 in the cardan drive. It's the same as what's spec'd from Moto Guzzi with Agip 80W-90 and is non-synthetic. The specs of the Agip is a generic as any hypoid 80W90 lube as it gets.

The gearbox, on the other hand is spec'ed to be Agip MGS85W-90 which is synthetic as best as I can tell (although the Agip USA website info is in error, I believe). They seem to have developed something specific for this application and maybe has some thing to do with shift quality.

Thanks All

Tony - have used only SIN10 since first service - don't know what was in it from factory, maybe real thick black coffee

Hitman - but why do you suggest a mineral based oil is preferred over a synthetic one once the CARC is run in - my understand was that minerals are better at run-in as they allow more friction - ala better bedding in of parts - but don't maybe handle high heat as well - wherein synthetics yes have lower friction rates but also handle way better the extreme heat loads ...... have used SIN75W90 since day one without an issue but what surprised me was that the Penrite site also recommends their hypoid 80W90 for Norges/Breva's etc - just trying to understand the differences between the two

Thanks
Paul

I run SIN 10 in the engine and SIN 75 in both the other bits. Did on my G11 for 30,000+ Km and for 43,000KM on my G12. So far neither of them have gone 'Pop' due to oil issues. I also use that with all my customers' bikes as well unless theyask me for something different.

My thinking was: since you had some left over hypoid 80W90, why not use it in the CARC? It's probably spec'd exactly the same as the Agip that Moto Guzzi recommends.

I won't debate the synthetic oil superiority issue, but the CARC just won't see any kind of heat anyway. Plus it might prevent some possibility of seal weeping. I seen some main seals leaking on CARC's; synthetic just might make it sneak past the seals a little easier.

I suppose warranty issues are no longer a concern for you. I went through all this to maintain fluids according to the strongly stated Moto Guzzi Agip (only) directive, in case I had any warranty claim. I can find Agip 10W-60 if I buy it by the case, and the Agip MGS 85W-90 (for a huge price), but I cannot find the Agip 80W90 anywhere (local or mailorder) unless I get it by the case - and four lifetime supplies just seems too excessive. However I found that the Agip 80W90 is about a generic as any hypoid 80W90, so I feel pretty comfortable using a Castrol substitute (dino). And yes, I see some signs of the front pinion weeping when I changed my rear tire - but I'll just monitor it for now.
