Speedo crapped

I had seen something about this. But a search didn't really reveal any good info. Maybe it was on the old board.

Got on the bike to head home (it had been raining) and after about a mile the red triangle it up and it displayed SERVICE on the dash. Thinking this might be an oil issue or something I pulled over. That is when I realized that the speedo was sitting at zero all the time.

After getting home, simply turning on the key shows 'service'. I went in and cleared any codes, and it remained.

So does a wet speedo sensor cause a dashboard 'service' indication?

Is there a fix for a wet sensor?
 
Wayne, yes most of the info was on the crashed board. The sensor on the front wheel is at fault. Our UK friend pried some apart, repaired them, and repotted them in epoxy. I imagine you could do the same, yes?

Rear I hope.

It just is goofy to light all of these bells and whistles for a flamed out sensor. A constant indication of 0 is pretty obvious to me.

My first thought was oil pressure low.

It's the same sensor, Cheap and nasty made in Spain.
They had the problems with water ingress for a couple of years now:(
I would have changed supplier:laugh:
MG must have had a good deal and bought millions of them, pitty they are crap:laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

I have exactly the same problem, thing is my bike has been in the shed for the winter, I did wash it before I put it away, maybe that messed it up, is this a warranty issue ? Or should I fix it myself ?
 
Probably quicker to fix yourself, but the way I see it is if a sensor is put on the back wheel it should be able to withstand a wash down.

Yes it a well known M/G issue and it is a warrenty claim:)

Don't know how long the replacement will last though, I have done 1000 mile on the new sensor.

It hasn't rained since though, I also wash it very gingerly:laugh:

It is a 5 min job to change if they are in stock:)

Hall Sensor for speed on my Griso was a real PITA!

Replaced under warranty promptly. The new one looked prone to fail also, as the sealing of the cable where it enters the sensor is very poor. I bought spares (about $40 US?) to keep in the tool bag while traveling. Easy to seal a dry one with epoxy or a rubberized sealant ( I used blue RTV that worked for a few months before peeling off, another board member tried nail polish).

Board member SteveUK gathered up some bad-uns from his dealer and re-potted them entirely with better epoxy. I've had one of his on for about 5000 miles in rain and even snow with NO problems:)

EASY FIX! I believe it will take you more time delivering your bike to the dealer than it takes to fix it yourself

Sat mine very near a light bulb for hours. My IR thermomoter showed it at 200F - 210F.

Verified it was working (passing a wrench past it with the key on).

I got it hot again. Then, while hot, I smeared it with goo called 'liquid tape' (has all that good stuff like naptha and MEK) and let it cool for a while. Hopefully it 'sucked in' some of the goo as it cooled. I then wiped it down and did a prettier job of coating it.

Time will tell.

I hooked up the VDSTS software to clear the service error. Does it clear itself if you drive it a while?
 
By memory,
My dash cleared on its own once good signal went through (within about a tenth of a mile)
 
One could presume that the ABS Stelvio will use the ABS signal?
 
How do you get the sensor off ? Looks fairly inaccessible without rear wheel removal, would a good spray of WD 40 not clear out the wetness ?

The removal on the Griso is simple, and I assume its the same for the Stelvio.
The sensor is mounted inboard the CARC with two Allen head bolts. They can be reached by using a socket drive mounted bit and extension through the wheel between the spokes, reaching beneath the muffler.
You may have to roll the bike a few inches to access both bolts directly... be carefull, the damn little things will strip their heads if you don't seat the bit firmly ( ah...yes, I might have learned that the hard way:blush:)
The cable is fastened with zip ties, easy to snip & replace. The plug is under the seat to the left side on the Griso.

WD40 MAY displace the moisture if used, but I'd be worried about how it may affect the adhesion of whatever you use to seal the gaps up with. A hair dryer and and few minutes taken may be all it needs.

I removed the rear wheel. Looked like a requirement.

WD40 may be a temporary fix, but them when you tried to seal it for a better fix, it would be all hard to do right.
 
Had the same problem on my Stelvio while riding in Norway. You can fix this without a trip to the shop or waiting for parts for months...

- Clean the sensor casing with pressurized air
- Apply a coating of WetProtect spray (http://www.wet-protect.com/)
- Wait a couple of hours
- done

Worked beautifully on my motorcycle. I spoke to dealers and they said they had experienced the same problems with replacement sensors fixed under warranty. It never rains in Mandello, you know ;)

Been out for a ride today, WD 40 did not do the job, my dealer has said they will replace the sensor when my bike is in for the service recall 23rd April, so may just wait till then, still every cloud has a silver lining, i'm not adding any mileage to the clocks and have discovered that I can now toggle my heated grips whilst on the move!
