Recently been having starter motor engagement issues, 2011 Stelvio NTX, 13500 miles

The first couple of attempts to start My bike it would just spin but not engage Flywheel, aventualy it would start.
I remembered reading a Tech memo about cleaning starter motors, as some where being replaced under warranty.
It took about one & half hours, followed Tech memo, stripped motor cleaned and greased where needed, put back on bike, fired up first time, brill.

Yup.....that clutch dust gets everywhere. Got a new one under warranty. Then took the old one and cleaned it as you did. Good as new and now have a spare.

Did you actually remove the 3 small gears on the back side and the solenoid. They were pretty gummed up and in need of a clean and lube also.
Also, while it was off, I used compressed air and cleaned out the clutch housing real well. Clouds of dust. Once it was cleaned out, the clutch sounded a lot better. Less chattering and no more dragging on cold start (the dreaded "brrrrrrrr" on colds starts).

Canuck 1969.

No I didn't remove the small gogs, they where very free, but did grease around them well, it was the main gog that spins out that was gummed up.
Unfortunately I don't have compressed air, I do still get that weird noise from the clutch now and agian.

It was also a good time to check and clean battery and earth connections.

Overall, starting the bike was a lot more positive.
