Starting Issue - Won't Fire?

Just got it firing!

Another starting issue, I'm beginning to think I'm jinxed!

Bike won't turn, at all. When I press the button it just makes a small "click" sound, that's it?

I've tried 3 keys and it's the same with each key. I took the panel off and checked the lead going to the starter with a multimeter and there's nothing going to it at all, like an immobiliser stopping it from even firing.

Hs anyone had this happen to them?

09 Moto Guzzi Stelvio.

Thanks.

It sounds like the starter relay is activating, but you aren't getting voltage to the solenoid when you press the starter button. BTW, if the bike isn't asking for a user code, it is recognizing the key so the key being used isn't the issue at all. Use the schematic to determine why the relay isn't providing voltage to the solenoid. It may be just a relay failure in that the relay is energizing, but not providing power to the solenoid.

As a test, run a wire from the "positive" directly to the solenoid. Even with the ign "off" the solenoid should operate and the starter spin the engine over. That way you eliminate a solenoid/starter problem .

I know a guy that is a good mechanic and he's coming round tonight after work to take a look so we'll give it a try.

Battery is fine, brand new not long ago and it's always on an optimate. I charged it just to make sure and the charger reported full battery, as does the optimate. I even plugged in a very good booster (it can start a 3l diesel) just to make sure so it's definitely not just a flat battery issue, I wish it was as that's an easy fix! :D

Anyway, I'll report back once he's taken a look.

So tonight I stripped all the fairing off to try and get at the wires, the clicking is coming from the R.Starter box at the right hand side of the forks, the lower black box in the next picture.

I've put voltage direct to the starter motor and that's firing fine, so it's not that. I've tested the R.Starter switch and that seems fine so I think that the issue is between the R.Starter switch and the solenoid, current isn't getting there for some reason so the next job is to trace the wire back and see if it's broken.

MY question is this, am I looking in the right place? Should I be looking somewhere else because as far as I can see I've found the starter relay? I only ask because when I search for a starter relay it looks different to the one I removed (the bottom black box) and the one that looks like mine is being reported as a heat sensor?

I hate electrics!!!!! :D

According to the wiring diagram, you have a start-up relay and a start-up maintenance relay. These are the only relays that include a yellow cable attached.

My understanding the start-up maintenance relay is not required for startup, and since they appear to be identical, you could try a simple swap. This should eliminate a faulty startup relay.

I'll try swapping them over and see what happens. Thanks.

I can't actually find them, they don't seem to be where the pictures (that I've looked at anyway) suggest.

I've checked the manual and can't find the location, I've followed the wires back from the front and they just vanish into the engine.

Has anyone got an 09 Stevlio that could tell me exactly where the Starter Relay and Starter Maintenance Relay are located?

Well I couldn't rectify this issue, even after stripping it down and checking all sorts so it'll have to go in the shop, more £££ :(

I had another look at this and it seems it was a fuse in the box near the r/h indicator behind the front fairing. Once replaced it now starts fine. Funny thing is, we checked all fuses with a multimeter and they reported working fine but once replaced the bike fired up?

I've had it out for a few test runs and it seems to be working fine.

A multimeter is not the best instrument to use when chasing electrical faults, as it will often show phantom voltages. I use a small probe with a bulb to trace circuits. If you insist on using the multimeter, bridge a bulb or resistor across the leads to lower its input impedance.
