After my adventures last summer, I noticed in the fall when I changed my oil and filters that there was a light dusting in the rear of my air box. the air filter was not plugged or really that dirty for that matter. I figured it was just due to the material that the HiFlo filter was made from not able to create a tight seal. Fast forward to this spring. I had it on my radar to explore it a little further and found that the rear sealing lip of the airbox had a sag in it, ~2-3 mm worth. When the filter is installed, it was enough of a sag to cause the filter to roll into the airbox a bit. I thought it was possibly due to the rear fasteners being to tight, but that was not the issue.
To resolve the issue, I used a head gun to heat the plastic and mold it back into place. The seal surface is now uniform for the entire perimeter and the filter no longer exhibits a desire to roll in. The image below is post heat treatment.
Has anyone else noticed this issue on their airbox?
