I am having a little heat issue on my 2014 NTX and wanted to get some collective insight on what might be the cause. I just returned from a 7 day trip through Oregon, Idaho, Montana with a brief sting in Canada before getting home to Seattle. I noticed that as the air temp goes up (above 76 or so), I am detecting a lot of heat in my right boot heel. If the temp goes over 90 I get a bit of heat in my left heel, but mostly in my right to the point that it is uncomfortable. If I shift my right foot to the passenger peg, then the shin gets hot - so I am thinking airflow off the exhaust or heat form the transmission\CARC because of the close proximity of the exhaust to the transmission.

Any way, I am looking for suggestions for the cause and possible fix. Thanks for any suggestions.

All I have is some "negative" data - on my 2009, even on the hottest days, I can't feel any heat coming off the motor. Maybe it's something that changed (bodywork? Big fuel tank?) between the '09 and the '14 models.

Check your exhaust gaskets to make sure they are tight (tighten to 18 ft-lbs). Both sides are almost exactly where you are talking about. The clamps have a tendency to loosen up and spit out the gaskets so tightening is a maintenance item.

Failing that, its a lean air cooled beast and it gets hot. As long as it is running right, does not sound like an engine issue. You can rich it up through various methods but I don't think that will solve your heat issue in your case if it is that extreme.

I know that is not the answer you are looking for. I usually get some heat off the engine on my knees and calf during stop and go but don't ever recall on my feet, or ever at cruising speeds.. I have a 2012 so the aerodynamics are the same.

canuck - Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that maybe the gaskets might be involved and will check that today.

Well I checked the gaskets and they looked OK. I went ahead and removed the bolts, put some copper seize on them and re-tightened both clamps then went for a ride. When I got back I checked temps with an IR thermometer and did not find any hotspots on either right or left sides near the foot pegs, so I suppose it could have been the right one was not tight enough before - and they were really difficult to snug up before putting the copper seize on the bolts.

I will have to keep check and see. I do believe I will get a new set of gaskets and put them in when doing the valve check and fluid replace in about a thousand miles just to be sure.
