Went to go for a ride on my Stelvio and had a no start situation. Long story "short" , did a check of usual suspects, battery condition/loose battery cable, neutral safety switch, fuses, relays and then changed to spare key to see if there was a "smart key" failure. Bike started up right up and I thought I'd found the problem, BUT as I turned the bars I noticed the headlights cut out while the bike continued to run. I turned the bars back and forth and repeated the lights on/off cycle while she continued to run. Turned her off and and could then duplicate the no start/start depending on position of the bars. I wiggled the wiring harness from the left grip down to the front of the frame and support brackets where it makes a turn and is routed back under the tank. It was possible to cause the on/off power condition by flexing the wire harness where it was platic tie wrapped to a sharp edged support bracket. There are no visible cuts in the plastic sheath, but I believe the wire(s) inside have become damaged by their being routed and secured at the brackets edge where along with the flexing caused while riding resulted in the wire failure. I will let you know what the shop finds, but it would be worth checking the harness routing to make sure there is enough slack and or better routing so as to avoid stressing the wires.

Cheers

She's fixed. The stress on the wires caused a seperation on one of the pin/wires to seperate at the connector making for an intermittent contact. Checked a 2010 model Stelvio they had on the floor and it had more than enough slack in the harness.

They also changed out a gas tank panel that had paint issues near the fuel cap area and spark plug caps that were leaking all kinds of electricity to places it could do no good.

Running sweet once again.

Cheers

Bob, thanks for the post. I've become a big fan of minimal zip-ties on all lines and wires, provided they don't get in the way for anything critical of course. Over the last decade, there have been more "no-starts" due to this same problem. Again, appreciate the post on it.

I recalled your post and had no joy on the bar end of the wire harness, mine failed at the other end. BMW had the same problems on a bunch of r1150r's where the harness was too tight and I shoulda/coulda/woulda noticed this prior to a failure. Always the little things.

Safe travels!
