Strange starting - flywheel sensor? (Griso 1100) -

I replaced the clutch hose on my Griso and when I was done I went to start it up to test ride it when I hit the starter button and nothing. No click, the dash was still on and turn signals would come on but not starter. Think I had 'disturbed' something routing the clutch hose I checked for the obvious (bike in gear, kill switch, etc.) -

Then for no reason in particular I bumped the bike forward in gear and then tried the starter again and VROOOM! - bike starts right up... It had stared fine every time since as well.

Question: - could there be a 'perfect spot' at which the flywheel sensor won't engage the starter motor? - Any other reason starter won't engage at first but then will when engine is turned slightly?

I doubt the cam position sensor is the culprit. It doesn't come into play until the engine is turning. Most likely a disturbed wire or something and moving the bike made contact. Could possibly be the neutral sensor as it is in the area you were working on.

Probably the neutral indicator/interlock. Happened to me on my Norge once, & a friend on his Griso a couple times. Gearbox is in neutral, neutral light on dash comes on, but somehow ECU doesn't realize bike is in neutral, so pressing starter button results in...nothing. After a half hour going crazy, checking battery leads, cable to starter, etc, called friend with Griso who said, try this: Clicked in to first, back to neutral, bang, starts right up & away I go. Never happened again, but I remember....

Ah, the neutral sensor is likely it... I was working in that area trying to snake a socket in through there to reach the clutch line - (I never got it that way and had to drop the mono shock to gain access) - so it was 'disturbed', I will go back and check and make sure the wire in on the sensor there good.

Re:Strange starting - flywheel sensor? (Griso 1100

I've had a couple of case recently where the bike as a whole was disturbed and required some convincing to start (and some searching to find neutral, too).

Doesn't seem to like being dropped ... :silly:

Re:Strange starting - flywheel sensor? (Griso 1100

If the neutral switch is the culprit, then surely the indicator would not show on the dashboard?

I know from experience that these neutral switches are far from 100% reliable. Replaced one in a California and one in a V11 Le Mans. Same part number as the Norge.

Re:Strange starting - flywheel sensor? (Griso 1100

You would think so-but like I said, in my case (& Jon's) the neutral light was definitely on-but what made the bike go was merely shifting in to first, than back in to neutral. So, may not be the switch per se, but something in the related circuitry clearly had to be retriggered or some such thing.
