Update to old thread on this topic. I had traced the sudden clutch engagement problem to engine oil on the plates, and blamed a non-standard rear main seal. It was cured after soaking the plates in carb cleaner repeatedly, and replacing seal. But...
Problem started to return this summer. I got to thinking about the breather check valve, pulled off the breather box, and found old flapper valve useless. Put in the update ballcheck valve and disabled the flapper. The problem hasn't gotten any worse, and has improved a bit. But I suppose the oil is already in there.
So this really might have been a crankcase breather problem all along. The valve is meant to maintain a slight negative pressure in the case, and if it isn't working, I suppose positive pulses could be causing some oil to blow past main seal, especially the single-lip one I had in there before putting in the Guzzi replacement.
