When I serviced the Breva (and discovered the problem with the drain plug magnet) I took the opportunity to change the gearbox oil. I bought some 75w90 synthetic gear oil. Contains expensive extreme pressure additives and is utra low friction for that extra 2 mpg.

Result: Will not change up cleanly when warm. Feels like the gears jam out of line and the dogs wont slide in. Maybe it is too low friction :?:

So at the weekend I drained the gearbox (back into the bottle: it cost £10  ) and refilled with EP90 mineral oil to GL5.

Result: works like it did before I messed with it.

Conclusion: Don't mess.

Try Mobil1 75W-90. I've been using it for years with good results in big blocks, small blocks and even BMWs.

The specs look the same as the oil I used. Just shows that they are not all the same.

If I see any Mobil 1 gear oil I'll pick up a litre for next time.

The standard EP90 is fine for now though.

Cheers

Martin

I'm amazed. Surprized that quality oils of the correct weight perform so differently. Next I'll start believing those gasoline ads touting "clean your engine" and "more horsepower."

So am I.
I've been using Castrol SAF-X 75W-90, a truck transmission oil API GL 4/5 - since a long time ago. Fully synth, and no problems at all. Ever.
And easy to find.
