Question. Should motor be hot or cold for tappet settings. I do have a manual but it does not say, I set mine cold and my god do they rattle or do they all make a noise? so any advise most welcome. Bike V35 Imola 11 1985 very low mileage 7456 KLMs. Thanks. Sailor. :?: :?:

Yep, cold. Completely cold. As in sitting over night.

They say that noisy valves are happy valves, because noisy valves usually indicate a longer closed time. Longer closed, means the valves have more time sitting on the head, which cools them. Especially the exhaust valve.

+1 to all sign216 said, but I would add that excessive tappet clearance (i.e., "Longer closed") means not only more valve noise but also less time for the engine to breathe properly = less new fuel in.

The only setting is the correct one. My 2004 Breva 750cc manual says:
VALVE CLEARANCE:
0.006 in (0.15 mm) intake
0.008 in (0.20 mm) exhaust

Be sure you know which set of gap guages (inches or mm) you are using.

Thanks all for your advise, much wiser now. I did set them cold at the correct gap so will accept that tappet noise is normal. Many thanks. sailor.

My V35 & V50 (incl V35 Imola and V50 Monza) manual gives a clearance of:

Inlet .0039"
Exhaust .0059"

In other words set 'em to 4 thou inlet and 6 thou exhaust.
