The 1st Ride of 2009 - Brisbane to Gloucester OZ

But enough of the communing with nature - the road calls and soon we were back on it for the final leg home.

Mt Warning rose like a steeple in front of us as we approached the Queensland border.

And we were thankful to the Queensland Government for leaving us in no doubt whatsoever that we had finally crossed the border back to our home state.

After riding on peaceful country roads for seven days it was a real shock to turn onto the Gold Coast Highway, a four lane freeway, and make the final dash for home. Nearly got clobbered by a piece of masonite that flew off the back of a ute and was headed straight for my head at one stage - what is it with city roads I hate em!

If you are fast you can see someone, most definitely not me, washing BOTH the bikes when we got home... after a total of 2210km and according to the Zumo a maximum speed of 131km/hr - I hope the cops weren't watching because I never saw them if they were.

And that as they say in the classics is that, as all good stories must come to an end. It's clear that the dirt is where all the fun really is, so we are negotiating for an F800GS and if the Stelvio ever makes it here, maybe one of those as well. Thanks for watching I hope you enjoyed the story as much as we did making it. It's a bloody big country and we want to see as much of it as we can, and a motorcycle is without doubt the best way to really see and experience the country as a traveller, so until next weekend when we will be off to see some more of it - cheers. B)

Re:The 1st Ride of 2009 - Brisbane to Gloucester O

I know that, erm, supine position all too well now, but as a result of an ejection at 40km/h ;-(

Mike, an F800GS?? I mean come on, here we all are trying to support a marque that's trying to steal some of the Bavarians' clientele and you'd go cross-breeding?? :D More seriously, have you considered one of the apparently more off-road-capable KTMs (which would still justify its presence once the Stelvio is there ;) )?

Re:The 1st Ride of 2009 - Brisbane to Gloucester O

One of my riding mates has a KTM 990s Adventure, rode it round the block once - they are a bit too much of a "weapon" . On second thoughts, maybe a tilt at the Dakar could be fun, anyone up for it? :eek:hmy:

Seriously, the real reason for the F800 - there are few offerings from the shall we say "better" manufacturers that would be suitable for her, and of course she has to "like" it. If Guzzi made a nice dualsport with the 750 engine it could be a goer, for our purposes at least, but problem is that bikes for women are even harder than bike gear for women, at least they make some bike gear in colours that might be acceptable.

Re:The 1st Ride of 2009 - Brisbane to Gloucester O

Goodness, Mike :p You're working in/with colour components, don't project a fixation with colour on your minister! :p
Besides, the colour of a dirt bike should depend on 1 thing only ... the colour of the dirt you last took her to! :D

Re:The 1st Ride of 2009 - Brisbane to Gloucester O

Finally read through the whole thread ... feeling very much deprived right now!

Out of curiosity: how come your roadsigns are so similar to the ones in the US and as far as I can see not at all like the ones in the UK?

Re:The 1st Ride of 2009 - Brisbane to Gloucester O

Buggered if I know, but it is a common comment from Swiss visitors that I often entertain, that our roads in terms of intersections and signage etc are very American, although of course from the left ( right ;) ) side perspective. But I wouldn't know if that is actually the case, never having been to the USA.

I suspect that the social scientists would also say that Australian beaurucracy is very much a hodge podge from many influences, and it is also true to say that although on the outside we Aussies seem to be a free living bunch, in fact we live in a country with an overly zealous and intrusive regulatory system, witness our overbearing helmet standards, and there are many other examples.

Scratch the surface of Australian society and you will find many inconsistencies with our preferred and actual lifestyle.

Bureaucrats in Crocodile Dundy outfit, eh? :D

I ought to remember to ask the next time I run into my colleague from Monash, he might know.

I like/prefer your/that kind of border crossing as opposed to:

This reflects most of this countries (state) border crossings, though there are exceptions of course. ;)

OR, even worse:

thanks Mike - great story and pics. Wish I'd taken a camera on my last few trips.

Yes that Oxley Hwy is awesome, tho the final resting place of my XJ650, which got laid down round one of those twisty bits..
