The reason they stopped producing the Big Block

Was reading interesting interview on Motociclismo (the browser translates it to English) and came across the interesting interview with a Piaggio Engineer. I always assumed they stopped making the big block due to emissions but apparently was more due to production capacity issues with the motor seemingly difficult and expensive to build:

Excellemt read.

I think motor journalists had convinced the world that the demise of the 1400 was emissions related. I often wondered how that could be true.

Thanks to you posting this excellent article, we can now read for ourselves, the real truth behind the unexplained engine void between the 1400’s and the new V100 engine.

Thank you very much. 🙏🙏🙏

Am I understanding right from the translation it seems that casting and/or machining the big block was difficult? I wonder if this was just the 4 valves or whether the 2 valves had the same issue?

Not difficult but rather a long detailed process with considerable leftover waste.

The cost to produce each engine was very high and it was not an economically sound process at all.

On top of that, I didn't read the article, they didn't sell well. My Audace sat on showroom floors for 3 years. It was moved between dealerships. That particular model was not very popular to boot. Great motorcycle just got too heavy for my aged body.

Remember, never judge model appeal by USA sales.

We are literally the smallest market for Moto Guzzi in the world.

All the 1400’s sold very well in Europe and the other major markets, like Australia.
