Hello,

Is there any advice from the folks here as to what I should ask for or tell the dealer before delivery of my new 2014 ( leftover ) Cali 1400 Custom?

They told me they are shipping one in from a warehouse.

I've seen some mention of lack of grease on the rear wheel fitting for example. Is this something I can alert the dealer to, so they prep it correctly?

Any advice would be welcome.

Thank you in advance.

Have them set the rear shocks using the guidelines in jbhotchkiss' post called "Transform the ride quality of your Custom". It is in the Cal 1400 section of this forum. Makes a really big improvement in ride and handling (which are really good to begin with).

Also have them check the exhaust heat shield bolts with a torque wrench. Some 1400 owners recommend Locktight on these bolts, but mine have not come loose since they were properly torqued.

It is very important for the dealer to download the latest fuel injection map before you take delivery.

Thank you. Ride quality is one of the reasons I went with this bike.

So the heat shield issue is something in addition to the exhaust cracking issue?

Does the latest fuel injection mapping download fix the problem early reviewers were talking about in regards to the "sport" mode being too abrupt?

The more I learn, the more questions I have, heh.

The heat shields vibrate if a screw comes loose. Mine were thread locked from new (2013). Only one has ever vibrated. Easy to tighten the bolts. The Turismo fuel map suits general riding. The Veloce map is for cracking on (which includes instant throttle response). Riders can choose the map easily enough. The crossover cracking issue...I installed Todd's replacement crossover to prevent this happening. I have read of at least one case of the little brackets which hold the heat shields (welded to the header pipes) cracking, as well.

Thank you.

I will ask the dealer to Locktight the bolts. After that it will be a case of my having to keep an eye on them.

Loctite doesn't do well on items that get hot. You'd be better off asking for Schnorr or Nord lock washers to be installed.

Edit: To correct predictive spelling error.

Huh. I wondered what the heat would do to that stuff... Fortunately I have a shop that sells only bolts, nuts, washers, screws etc. about 1 mile away.

I just replaced my back tire and sure enough the spline was dry. We added a little grease to make removal next time a little easier.
